Heading into the season, there was not many expectations about this team, and they still finished with a losing record, but they have to take it as a win that they were even invited to this. DePaul headed into the Big East Tournament as a 10 seed, and in the last game, they were knocked off by Creighton. They were able to force double overtime, but they just ran out of gas late. Layden Blocker was the top player putting up 25 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Three different players put up at least 10 points. 

DePaul has a 14-19 overall record, averaging 72.8 points per game. The defense has been the biggest issue, and they are giving up 74.8 points per game. CJ Gunn has been the top player, averaging 12.8 points while shooting 42.9 percent from the field.

A Down Year for Cincinnati

It’s all about perspective, and from Cincinnati’s standpoint, it has been a disappointing year, even though they sit with an 18-15 record. Cincinnati’s last game was against the Iowa State Cyconles, and it was an ugly one. The offense only managed 56 points, while the defense gave up 76 points, and that led to the defeat. At halftime, they were down by nine points, and in the second half, it didn’t get any easier. Guard Jizzle James was the top player putting up 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

Cincinnati is averaging 70.5 points on the season while its defense is giving up 65.7 points per game. They leaned on the defense, which is 26th in the league. James has been the top player overall, averaging 12.8 points while shooting over 40 percent from the field.

It might not be a popular play, but I believe DePaul is going to keep this game close. DePaul really looked like they were about to knock off a very good Creighton team in the last game, and I expect their defense is going to be strong again. Cincinnati is averaging 70.5 points per game, and their offense just isn’t going to be good enough here. Will the favorites win? Probably, but this is just way too many points. DePaul’s defense will keep them in it until the last couple of possessions.

Creighton Bluejays Betting Preview

The Creighton Bluejays are 22-9 (15-5) this year after they defeated Butler by a score of 87-74 in their last game. Creighton led 52-44 at halftime and was able to maintain that lead in the second half for the win. The Bluejays shot 52.3% from the field, 43.2% on three pointers, and 60% on free throws in the game. Ryan Kalkbrenner led Creighton with 27 points and 15 rebounds, while Steven Ashworth added 23 points and 11 assists in the game. 

Prior to that victory, the Bluejays defeated Seton Hall by a score of 79-61, but did lose to Xavier by a score of 83-61 before that. Creighton has won four of their last five games and they finished second in the Big East standings with a 15-5 record. Creighton has scored 75.4 points per game and they have allowed 69 points against per game, while also averaging 37.8 rebounds and 17.3 assists per game this season. Ryan Kalkbrenner is averaging 19.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, while Steven Ashworth is averaging 16.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game this year. Creighton is shooting 47.7% from the field, 74.1% on free throws, and 34.4% on three pointers this season. 

DePaul Blue Demons Betting Preview

DePaul comes into this matchup looking for their fourth win in a row, which doesn’t happen in conference play very often for them, but all three wins came against Georgetown and Providence. The Blue Demons are shooting 44.4% from the field this year and their defense has been a problem, as they have allowed at least 75 points in four of their last five games. Creighton has won four of their last five games and they are shooting nearly 48% from the field. The Bluejays went through a little rough patch a few weeks ago, but they have bounced back and have scored at least 79 points in three of their last five. With two straight wins, the best ball DePaul has played since November, you can talk yourself into the underdog. I’m on Depaul and the points here. Normally I take the approach of seeing Depaul on the board and blindly fading the Blue Demons just because Depaul has been so bad in Big East conference play for the better part of the last two decades. That being said, Providence isn’t playing that much better to where I want to be laying this many points with the Friars, and Depaul has been most competitive this season against the teams that are on their level, which are definitely few and far between. I think Depaul keeps this one close and dare I say, potentially pulls off the outright upset. Give me Depaul here with the points.

Butler Bulldogs Betting Preview

St. John’s beat DePaul by 28 points back in December, and has won eight of the last 10 games against the Blue Demons. The favorite is 7-2-1 ATS in the last 10 games between DePaul and St. Johns. DePaul’s inability to string together stops is likely going to be the downfall in this spot. Give me St. John’s in another comfortable win over DePaul.

I’m on Marquette here. I’ve been a Depaul hater for a while now, but even if we took that out of the equation because they’ve actually looked competitive in some spots in Big East play this year, you’re seeing Marquette come in off of three straight losses against the three other top teams in the Big East in UConn, St. John’s and Creighton, and it has to bug Marquette that they lost all three games against teams they’ll likely have to go through if they’re going to win the Big East. Now back home, I’m expecting a bit of a statement performance from Marquette here and I think it’s just a case of wrong place, wrong time for Depaul, who is simply overmatched by a fair margin in this game. Give me Marquette in this one.

Villanova Wildcats Betting Preview

The Wildcats had a spotty run in November but they were looking good by early January. Since then, however, Villanova has faltered. During a 3-4 opening run the Wildcats took losses to Columbia, Saint Joseph’s, Virginia, and Maryland. Wins over Rider, Cincinnati, Temple, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Seton Hall followed, then a loss to Creighton. After three more wins over Butler, DePaul, and UConn, the Wildcats began a 1-5 skid. The lone win in that time was over Providence. Otherwise, it’s been losses to St. John’s, Xavier, Georgetown, Marquette, and Creighton along the way to a spotty 12-10 overall record through the first 22 games this year.

In the Creighton game over the weekend, the Wildcats were looking at a 29-29 tie on the scoreboard following the first half. Villanova was outscored 33-31 the rest of the way during a tough home loss 62-60 in the end. Leading team scorer Wooga Poplar had 24 points with four rebounds and five steals. Eric Dixon added 17 points with five rebounds and two assists, while Jordan Longino chipped in eight points with two rebounds in 39 minutes of action in the loss.

DePaul Blue Demons Betting Preview

Over on the DePaul side, they started out on a great run over their first seven games. Since then, however, the wins have been few and far between. The Demons beat Prairie View, Mercer, Duquesne, Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, and Valparaiso in those opening matchups, then hit a 2-4 slide versus Texas Tech, Providence, St. John’s, and Northwestern with wins over Wichita State, and Loyola MD. After losses to UConn, Villanova, Seton Hall, Xavier, and Marquette, the Demons got another win over Georgetown. Since then it’s been a 1-3 run with losses to Creighton, Butler, and UConn ahead of a win over Seton Hall. The result so far has been an 11-12 overall record through 23 games for the Blue Demons.

Matched up against Seton Hall in their Sunday game, the Demons came out of the first half holding a 38-29 advantage. DePaul kept it rolling from there on a 36-28 stretch and took the victory 74-57 in the end. NJ Benson doubled up on 17 points with 11 rebounds and three assists alongside a pair of blocks, while CJ Gunn chipped in 16 points with seven rebounds. Isaiah Rivera came off the bench for 14 points and two rebounds, and Jacob Meyer added 11 points with one assist and one steal in 19 minutes off the bench himself.

That said, the Wildcats didn’t play great versus Creighton in their last outing, shooting 39.7 percent from the field and just 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from 3-point range alongside a 40-28 rebounding deficit. The lone saving grace was the 25 points off 18 Bluejays turnovers, but it wasn’t enough to get the victory. During this 1-5 skid, the Wildcats have been below 69 points in four of the five losses, so it’d be nice to see them eclipse the 70-point mark here.

Villanova did just that the last time these teams saw each other back on January 4. The Wildcats posted a 100-56 blowout win at home there, shooting a stellar 59.7 percent from the field and 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from outside. The only spotty shooting work came at the line (10-of-18 for 55.6 percent), but otherwise, it was a pretty perfect performance all things considered. There were three different players that put up at least 13 points. Two games ago against Creighton, they struggled also and ended up losing 79-54.

Seton Hall fell just short in the last game but they aren’t going to even get close to that number here. DePaul Blue Demons Betting Preview

The Blue Demons kicked off the season on a great run, and they were riding high by the end of November. Since then, however, the wins have been few and hard to come by as DePaul has slipped below .500 again. The Demons took victories over Southern Indiana, Prairie View, Mercer, Duquesne, Eastern Illinois, Northern Illinois, and Valparaiso in succession during a hot start over their first seven outings. A 2-4 run came next with wins over Wichita State and Loyola Maryland alongside losses to Texas Tech, Providence, St. John’s, and Northwestern. Since then it’s been a rough 1-7 run over the last eight games. The lone win in that time was over Georgetown. Otherwise, it’s been losses to UConn, Villanova, Seton Hall, Xavier, Marquette, Creighton, and Butler in that time. The result has been a 10-11 overall record for the Blue Demons through the first 21 outings of the 2024-25 season so far.

Back on Saturday versus Butler, the Blue Demons went into the second half with a 40-33 deficit. DePaul didn’t end up getting any closer than that, falling further behind on a 46-36 run the rest of the way during an 86-69 defeat. NJ Benson was the team’s leading scorer in the losing effort, posting 20 points with nine rebounds in a near double-double. CJ Gunn added 16 points with four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Conor Enright added 12 points with six assists, two rebounds, and two steals in 36 minutes of work as well.

UConn Huskies Betting Preview

Over on the UConn side, they’ve had an odd season thus far. The Huskies posted a losing streak on neutral courts back in November and they’ve been sketchy in the win column lately. Other than that it’s been smooth sailing, though. UConn took out Sacred Heart, New Hampshire, Le Moyne, and East Texas A&M in their first four games, then fell in succession versus Memphis, Colorado, and Dayton. A nice win streak ensued over Maryland Eastern Shore, Baylor, Texas, Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler, DePaul, and Providence. From there, however, it’s been a 2-3 stretch over the last five games for the Huskies. The wins were over Georgetown and Butler. Otherwise, it was losses to Villanova, Creighton, and Xavier in that time, giving UConn a 14-6 overall run through 20 games this season.

Matched up against Xavier over the weekend, the Huskies held a slim 41-40 edge going into the locker room. Xavier came back with a 36-31 second half, however, giving UConn a 76-72 loss in the end. Topping the team with a double-double in the losing effort was Solo Ball with 20 points, 11 rebounds and one assist. Aidan Mahaney came off the bench for 14 points with three boards, three assists and three turnovers, while both Samson Johnson (four rebounds; five blocks) and Hassan Diarra (five rebounds; four assists) scored 12 points each.

Why the Connecticut Huskies will win

I’ll lean toward UConn, but I’m probably avoiding this one. The Huskies have once again run into some issues in the win column lately, and they’re coming off another defeat via a pretty decent (but not great) Xavier team. UConn shot 47.3 percent from the field in that one and won the rebounding battle 35-28. That said, the Huskies also coughed up 13 turnovers for 22 Musketeers points. UConn has been pretty erratic on the scoreboard during this 2-3 run as well. They’ve been below 69 points in three of those five games.

The last time these teams met up back on New Year’s Day, the Huskies secured an 81-68 road victory. UConn had turnover trouble in that one as well (13 for 12 points), so they’ll need to focus on ball security this time. I still like the Huskies here, but I’m not enthusiastic about it.

Creighton is Heating Up

Creighton went through a little lull, but they have figured it out again and they have all kinds of confidence right now. Two games ago against Providence, Creighton was able to secure the 84-64, and in the last game against UConn, they were able to secure the 68-63 victory. At halftime, they were up 35-28 and even though they didn’t play as well in the second half they were still able to pick up the win. Jamiya Neal put up 24 points, four rebounds, and one assist. There were three different players that put up at least 12 points. 

Creighton comes into this game with a 12-6 record and they have gone 9-7-2 against the spread. Creighton is averaging 75.4 points while their defense is giving up 70.1 points per game. There are normally things you can count on in January for Depaul in the Windy City, snow, cold weather, wind, and Depaul getting beat up in conference play on the hardwood. Seton Hall’s far from a world-beater but they play slow and frustrating on offense and suffocating on defense. I think Seton Hall does more of the same to Depaul here as the Blue Demons take another frustrating L in this one. Give me the Pirates in this one.

Villanova has bounced back from a slow start to the season and they have won six of their last seven games. The Wildcats are shooting 48.5% from the field, but their defense has been very solid. DePaul has struggled within conference play for years and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. We know the Blue Demons will upset at least one or two teams within the conference, but I don’t think it is going to be here. Villanova is trending in the right direction and I like them to get an easy win here.

UConn Huskies Betting Preview

The UConn Huskies beat Butler and Xavier, and they play Providence, Villanova, and Georgetown next. The UConn Huskies are averaging 83.9 points on 49.4 percent shooting and allowing 67.5 points on 41.7 percent shooting. Alex Karaban is averaging 16.5 points and 5.1 rebounds, while Liam McNeeley is averaging 13.9 points and 2.6 assists. Solo Ball is the third double-digit scorer and Tarris Reed Jr. is grabbing 8.2 rebounds. The UConn Huskies are shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc and 78.8 percent from the free throw line. The UConn Huskies are allowing 38.8 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 33.8 rebounds per game.

DePaul Blue Demons Betting Preview

The DePaul Blue Demons lost to Northwestern, beat Loyola Maryland, and they play Villanova, Seton Hall, and Xavier next. The DePaul Blue Demons are averaging 80.2 points on 46.2 percent shooting and allowing 69.7 points on 43 percent shooting. Jacob Meyer is averaging 14.5 points and 4 rebounds, while Isaiah Rivera is averaging 11.4 points and 3.6 rebounds. David Skogman is dishing 1.6 assists and CJ Gunn is grabbing 2.4 rebounds. The DePaul Blue Demons are shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc and 69.7 percent from the free throw line. The DePaul Blue Demons are allowing 30.6 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 35.6 rebounds per game.

DePaul vs UConn Injury Report

David Skogman is questionable for DePaul due to a leg injury. Skogman missed DePaul’s last game, and it would be key if he could return, considering he’s the Blue Demon’s top rebounder.

UCONN will continue to be without Ahmad Nowell due to a shoulder injury.   

DePaul vs UConn Prediction

The DePaul Blue Demons have had issues when playing decent teams this season, and that includes a loss to Providence in the favorite role. It’s not going to be any easier for DePaul if Skogman can’t go, as UCONN has serious size down low, and he’s the top rebounder for the Blue Demons. DePaul is 1-4-1 ATS in its last 6 games. UCONN has a history of beating up on lesser teams and is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games.

Check the injury report before betting, as the status of Skogman does play a factor. Still, UCONN should make light work of this Big East matchup. Give me the Huskies in a double-digit road victory.

DePaul is Struggling

After a strong start to the season, DePaul is having some issues as of late. Two games ago against St John’s they were defeated 89-61 and in the last game against Northwestern, they were defeated 84-64. Acob Myer had a strong game putting up 18 points and three rebounds. DePaul on the season is averaging 79.8 points while their defense is giving up 70.1 points per game. The offense is ranked 85th in the league while the defense is ranked 155th. Guard Jacob Meyer has been the top player so far this season, averaging 14.7 points while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 45.1 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Loyola Fell Short Again

Loyola in the last game faced off against Hampton and they scored only 68 points while the defense gave up 76 points. Milos Ilic was the top player for Loyola putting up 22 points, eight rebounds, and two assists. Two games ago against Mount St Mary’s they were able to secure the 77-69 victory. Jordan Stiemke had a strong game putting up 22 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Loyola, on the season, is averaging 70.7 points while their defense is giving up 68.7 points per game. The offense is ranked 228th in the league while the defense is ranked 115th. Milos Ilic is averaging 14.8 points while shooting 55.1 percent from the field. 

Why Loyola Will Beat DePaul

• DePaul has lost four of its last five games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
• The road team has won three of Loyola (MD)’s last four games.

DePaul vs Loyola-Maryland Prediction

DePaul has lost all kinds of confidence, and it’s not going ot be easy for them to bounce back easily in this game. DePaul’s defense is giving up 70.1 points per game and they are going to really struggle in this game. Loyola is averaging 70.7 points per game and their offense is going to have no issue running up the score here. DePaul will have no answer and Loyola will end up covering the spread. This is one of my favorite plays on the board.
