Chattanooga has picked up two very impressive wins over Bradley and Dayton in their last two games, so they shouldn’t be intimidated at all against their foes from the A-10. The Mocs are shooting over 48% from the field this year and they are scoring 79.6 points per game. Loyola Chicago was able to handle Kent State rather easily in their last game, but they also had a very nice win over San Francisco prior to that. The Ramblers are only shooting 45.7% from the field, but they play very tight defense and have allowed 64 points or fewer in three of their last five games. This should be a very fun game to watch, but I like the under in this game, as I think Loyola’s defense will really slow things down.

I’m on Kent State and the points here. I get the case to be made for Loyola Chicago being at home and this NIT has been tough from a travel perspective on both teams, with Kent State making two cross-country trips already. The Ramblers come from the West Coast themselves. That being said, these two teams are very similar and match up pretty well in my opinion, so much so that I think that the points have some value in this game. Loyola Chicago’s two NIT games so far have been decided by 4 points and even with this being their first home game of the NIT, I think another close matchup is in store here. I’m on Loyola-Chicago here. I just think the Ramblers defense is going to be tough for San Jose State to break down here. While the Spartans will likely be ready to go for a postseason tournament as the Spartans haven’t seen postseason basketball in a while, the fact is that they weren’t anything special at times. Sure, I rode the Spartans a ton in the underdog role and cashed a lot, but a lot of those games came when the Spartans were getting a lot more than what they’re getting here. The Ramblers have a defense that can travel and I think Loyola-Chicago gets the win and cover on the road here.

Loyola Ramblers Betting Preview

The Ramblers suffered a rough stretch from December into February, but outside of that it’s been a very nice season. Loyola was 9-1 around six weeks into the year, then fell to Oakland, Charleston, Murray State, VCU, Saint Joseph’s, Dayton and George Mason in the next 10 games. Since the the Ramblers have only lost twice, to Duquesne and Saint Louis. Otherwise it’s been a string of wins over Saint Joseph’s, St. Bonaventure, Richmond, Saint Louis, Davidson, Dayton, George Washington, Davidson, UMass and Saint Louis. In total that gives the Ramblers a 22-10 overall run across 32 games this season so far.

On Friday versus Saint Louis, the Ramblers were up 38-30 going into the second half. Loyola kept the pace from there on a 34-34 run and took the win in the ned 72-64. Leading team scorer Des Watson finished with 25 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

VCU Rams Betting Preview

Over on the VCU side, they’ve been very consistent in the record column this year, with only a couple of (brief) instances of spotty play. The Rams lost two of their first six games, then took wins over Miami, Elizabeth City State, Georgia Southern, Penn and Colorado State. Losses came in the next three games versus New Mexico and St. Bonaventure (with a win over William & Mary), then wins over Loyola, Fordham, Saint Louis, Saint Joseph’s, Rhode Island and St. Bonaventure in succession. After a loss to Saint Louis, the Rams took out Richmond, La Salle, Dayton, George Washington, UMass, George Mason, Richmond, Davidson and Duquesne. VCU would cap the regular season with a loss to Dayton, then the team took out St. Bonaventure on Friday in tournament play. That gives the Rams a 26-6 overall run across 32 games this year so far.

Matched up against St. Bonaventure on Friday, the Rams jumped out to a comfortable 10-point lead by halftime. VCU hit a 40-33 stretch the rest of the way, cruising to the win 76-59 in the end. Tops in scoring was Jack Clark with 17 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist. Joe Bamisile added 13 points with three rebounds, while Zeb Jackson topped the bench scoring with his 14 points and one rebound in 21 minutes of work. Brandon Jennings added 12 points with five rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench as well. Starter Max Shulga had 11 assists, six boards and two points in 36 minutes during the win.

VCU vs Loyola Prediction

I’ll likely stick with VCU. The Rams dispatched a pretty good St. Bonaventure team without too much fanfare on Friday, hitting a reasonable 42.6 percent from the field and a nice 9-of-10 (90 percent) from the line. VCU had a 40-36 rebounding edge with 17 team assists and 21 points off 13 Bonnies turnovers. On defense the Rams held St. Bonaventure to just 36.4 percent from the field and 21.1 percent from 3-point range. That gives VCU at least 70 points in 11 straight games, a 10-1 overall run.

These teams last met back on January 4 in an 84-65 blowout win for the Rams. Oddly enough, VCU trailed 40-37 at the break in that one, but ended up shooting a nice 49.2 percent from the field with a 40-28 rebounding edge. It wasn’t the cleanest game with 25 total turnovers (14 for Loyola), and the Ramblers shot just 38.2 percent from the field alongside 15-of-23 (65.2 percent) from the line. VCU should be able to get off to a better start here, and I think they’ll ride that momentum to a decisive victory in this tournament rematch.

When these two teams faced off on March 1st it was Saint Louis that secured the 98-67 victory. 

Can St. Louis Offense Continue Success? 

Saint Louis faced off against the Davidson Wildcats on Thursday, and they sure looked impressive. The defense gave up 75 points, but the offense couldn’t be stopped, scoring 83 points on the way to the win. Isaiah Swope had a strong game, scoring 26 points, three rebounds, and two assists.Four different players scored at least 13 points. The last time they played Loyola Chicago, the offense scored 98 points, and they are going to need the offense to continue that success here. 

Saint Louis sits with a 19-13 record and especially as of late, the offense has looked impressive. Saint Louis overall is averaging 74.3 points while their defense is giving up 70.1 points per game. In this game they should be expected to push the pace again. Gibson Jimerson is averaging 18.3 points while their defense is giving up 44 points per game. Robbie Avila is also having a huge year and is averaging 17.4 points. 

Loyola Chicago Defense Dominated

The Loyola Chicago defense dominated in the last game against UMass. Loyola Chicago gave up only 51 points on the way to the comfortable victory. At halftime they were up 34-21 and in the second half they continued that success on the way to the win. Jayden Dawson also really stepped up putting up 17 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Two games ago against Davidson they also really looked good and they ended up picking up a 74-51 victory. 

Loyola has a 21-10 overall record and has gone 12-6 against the spread. The Ramblers are averaging 74.2 points while their defense is giving up 69 points. The defense looked so bad in the last game against Saint Louis, and that just can’t happen again here. Gibson Jimerson has been the top player, averaging 18.3 points while shooting over 44 percent from the field. 

Loyola Chicago vs St. Louis Prediction

Give me Saint Louis here, and it’s one of my favroite plays on the board. Remember what happened last time these two teams faced off? Let me remind you, Saint Louis put up 98 points and since that game their offense has just continued to run up the score. Loyola Chicago is averaging 74.2 points, but their offensei sn’t going to be enough here. Saint Louis is going to pull away early here, and they are going to cruise. They will win this game by six or more points. Back the Billikens.

Davidson Wildcats Betting Preview

Dayton Flyers Betting Preview

The Flyers had a rough run going briefly last month, but overall they’ve done quite well this season so far. Dayton won 10 of their first 12 games, taking out St Francis PA, Northwestern, Ball State, Capital, New Mexico State, UConn, Western Michigan, Lehigh, Marquette, and UNLV. A 1-4 stretch came next, however, featuring a lone win over La Salle among losses to Cincinnati, George Washington, UMass, and George Mason. Since then it’s been a nice 7-2 run for the Flyers. The losses have come versus St. Bonaventure and VCU in that stretch. The wins otherwise were over Loyola, Duquesne, Saint Joseph’s, Saint Louis, Davidson, Fordham, and Duquesne. That gives Dayton an 18-8 overall run through 26 games so far this year.

Last weekend versus Duquesne, Dayton was down 44-40 at halftime. The Flyers came back on a 37-32 second-half run though, eventually taking the win 77-76 in the end. Enoch Cheeks led the team with 19 points, five rebounds, and three steals in the comeback victory. Zed Key came off the bench for 18 points with six rebounds and one steal in 19 minutes. Also in double-figures was Malachi Smith with 12 points, three assists and one steal in 26 minutes of work.

The Ramblers beat Chicago State, Detroit, Eureka, Princeton, Southern Utah, Tulsa, Eastern Michigan, South Florida, and Canisius over their first 10 games, then fell to Oakland, Charleston, Murray State, and VCU in the next four. A 3-3 run came next with wins over La Salle, Rhode Island, and Fordham amid losses to Saint Joseph’s, Dayton, and George Mason. Loyola would win four of the next five games though, taking out Saint Joseph’s, St. Bonaventure, Richmond, and Saint Louis with a lone loss to Duquesne. That would give Loyola a 16-9 run through 25 games to start the year.

Matched up against Davidson on Tuesday, the Ramblers were able to extend their win streak to three. Loyola had a 32-28 advantage going into the second half, then finished off on a 45-41 run that gave the Ramblers a 77-69 victory. Leading the team in scoring was Jayden Dawson with 24 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Des Watson added 15 points with four steals, three rebounds and two assists. Miles Rubin had 14 points with seven boards, while Sheldon Edwards chipped in with 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 27 minutes of work on the floor. Tops off the bench was Jalen DeLoach with four points and six rebounds in 11 minutes.

I’ll just stick with Dayton here, but we should have a pretty good matchup. The Flyers are sitting on consecutive wins right now, and they’ve scored 68 or more points in five straight (a 4-1 run). Dayton didn’t play all that great in their last appearance versus a middling Duquesne team though, and they were lucky to escape with a home win.

The last time these teams saw each other was back on January 18 in a tight 83-81 home win for the Flyers. In that one, both teams shot well (over 47 percent) and had comparable rebounding numbers. Dayton hit 21 from the line, however, and Loyola had just nine made foul shots. The 19 Ramblers turnovers for 19 Flyers points didn’t help either during a sloppy overall game (33 total turnovers). I like another competitive game in the rematch, with Dayton powering it out in the end, but you could call it either way.

I’m leaning towards Saint Louis here. The Billikens have not been as strong as I and many hoped they’d probably be this season considering how many pieces transferred over with coach Josh Schertz from Indiana State in the offseason, but this is still a talented team and I think from a talent perspective, the Sycamores are the better team. I think this is a game where Saint Louis can live up to some of the expectations and getting a free bucket with what I feel is the better team sounds good to me. The offense is ranked 70th in the league while the defense is ranked 145th. Sebastian Thomas is having a strong season averaging 18.7 points while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from behind the tree point line.

What an Awful Game for Loyola Chicago

Loyola Chicago in the last game faced Saint Joseph’s and they didn’t look good. The offense scored only 57 points while the defense gave up 93 points and that led to the defeat. At halftime, they were down 53-29 and in the second half, they couldn’t bounce back. Sheldon Edwards was the top player putting up 12 points, five rebounds, and one assist. There were four different players that upt at least 10 points. Two games ago against La Salle, they scored 79 points and they ended up winning by 11 points. 

Loyola is averaging 75.3 points while their defense is giving up 69.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 178th in the league while the defense is ranked 119th. Charleston Cougars Betting Preview

Charleston posted a 4-2 run over their first six outings, beating Southern Illinois, South Florida, FAU, and the Citadel during that time. The Cougars would then take out Northern Kentucky, Tusculum, Saint Joseph’s, and Wofford before facing Oregon State on Sunday.

In the matchup with the Beavers, the Cougars were looking at a 35-26 deficit by the break. Charleston kept the pace from there but eventually lost 74-65. Leading the team in scoring were Derrin Boyd and Lazar Djokovic (bench), each with 13 points.

On Sunday versus Oakland, the Ramblers fell back into the loss column. Loyola was down 33-27 at the break and made a comeback in the second but ended up dropping it 72-71. Miles Rubin finished with a team-high 21 points and nine rebounds.

I’ll probably take a stab at Charleston. It’s a really tight line, though. Also, the Cougars need a better outing here than they had Sunday. In that one, Charleston shot just 36.2 percent from the field against Oregon State and 25 percent (6-of-24) from outside alongside 13 turnovers and a 36-31 rebounding deficit. The Cougars had scored 77 or more points in each of the previous four games (all wins) however, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them get back to business offensively in this one.

As for Loyola, they took a tough loss Sunday after a slow start against Oakland. The Ramblers shot well (49.1 percent) but also had 10 turnovers and got out-rebounded 36-30. Loyola has scored 71 or more points in 10 of 11 games so far; this one’s looking like a high total.

It’ll be interesting to see how pleasantries are renewed between these two former MVC foes, but I’m looking at the Ramblers and the points. Bradley over the last couple of years has been a really strong ATS team at home, but the Ramblers are no joke. Loyola-Chicago has a defense that travels and have an offense that can put up points on any defense. Bradley’s defense is rock solid as well, but I think this ends up being a game that comes down to the wire and one where I’ll be happy to have points in my back pocket.

St. Bonaventure Bonnies

The Bonnies got off to a 10-3 start early in the year, but haven’t been able to win more than two consecutive games since then. St. Bonaventure finished off the regular season on a 4-3 stretch with wins over Fordham, Davidson, UMass and Loyola alongside losses to La Salle, George Washington and Saint Louis.

In Wednesday’s tournament game versus La Salle, St. Bonaventure had a close call. The Bonnies were up 42-34 going into the second half but had to hang on during a 39-33 deficit from there in a 75-73 win. Mika Adams-Woods led the team on his 15 points with six assists and two steals.

Loyola Ramblers

Over on the Loyola side, they managed a 13-7 run through their first 20 games this year. The Ramblers would hit a seven-game win streak lasting most of February, finally coming to an end with a loss to St. Bonaventure. Loyola has beaten Dayton, Davidson and La Salle in their last three.

Last weekend versus La Salle, the Ramblers got off to a 37-28 advantage by halftime. Loyola kept it going with a 27-26 run the rest of the way in a 64-54 win. Dame Adelekun came off the bench to lead the team on a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes.

ANDREW’S FREE ST BONAVENTURE VS LOYOLA PREDICTION

I’ll probably stay with Loyola in this one. The Ramblers didn’t shoot very well (37.9 percent) in their latest win over La Salle, and they hit just 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from the line. Outside of that however, Loyola wasn’t too bad on 42 rebounds and 39 percent shooting allowed. The Ramblers have been below 70 points in three of the last four games, though.

In the last meeting between these teams on February 27, Loyola took a 79-64 road loss. The Ramblers got off to a rough start in the first half (a 41-26 deficit) and only ended up shooting 38.2 percent from the field. The 19 turnovers for 24 Bonnies points were another area that needs massive improvement in this tournament rematch. Provided Loyola can get off to a better start here (and cut down the turnovers) I think they’ve got a good chance at controlling the flow. I’m probably not touching it, though.

Dayton Flyers

The Flyers managed a 16-2 stretch over their first 18 games, taking losses to only Northwestern and Houston. Dayton would lose to Richmond and VCU over the next five, but since then it’s been a 3-1 run with wins versus Duquesne, Fordham and Davidson (and a loss to George Mason).

In the Davidson game on Tuesday, the Flyers got off to a big lead 40-21 in the first half. Dayton was outscored 45-40 from there on the way to an 80-66 victory. All five starters finished in double-figures in the win, while Koby Brea led the team off the bench with 17 points.

Over on the Ramblers’ side, their year kicked off on a 13-7 run over their first 20 games. Loyola then hit a seven-game win streak over Saint Louis, Davidson, George Mason, George Washington, Saint Joseph’s, Rhode Island and George Mason before another loss to St. Bonaventure.

Back on Tuesday versus St. Bonaventure, the Ramblers were down 41-26 after a rough start in the first half. Loyola was able to keep the pace on a 38-38 run the rest of the way but ended up losing 79-64. Leading the team in the losing effort was Philip Alston on 12 points and three boards.

ANDREW’S FREE DAYTON VS LOYOLA PREDICTION

I’ll try Loyola here, but you could argue it either way. The line’s a little too thin to mess with anyhow. The Ramblers do need a solid bounce-back effort after a sketchy road loss to St. Bonaventure. In that one Loyola started slowly, eventually shooting 38.2 percent from the field with 19 turnovers that led to 24 Bonnies points. The Ramblers had scored 76 or more points in six of seven games prior to that, however.

As for Dayton, they’ve lost three of their last four road games and aren’t scoring very well away from home (67 or fewer points in each of the three losses). If the Flyers aren’t totally on point here I could see Loyola powering out a cover/win, but it’ll be an interesting matchup regardless.

I’m leaning towards Loyola-Chicago here. I just think the Ramblers are the better team with a rock solid defense and they’ve been playing some of the best basketball I’ve seen them play in the last couple of years and I think they get themselves a win and cover here.
