San Diego State led 33-28 at halftime, but they only scored 19 points in the second half in the loss. Nick Boyd led San Diego State with 20 points and three assists, while Jared Coleman-Jones added seven points and nine rebounds in the loss. 

Prior to that game, the Aztecs defeated Nevada by a score of 80-61, but did lose to UNLV by a score of 74-67 before that. San Diego State has won three of their last five games and they finished tied for fourth in the Mountain West standings with a 14-6 record. The Aztecs did pickup wins against UC San Diego, Creighton, and Houston in the non-conference, while losing to Gonzaga by 13 points and Oregon by 10 points. San Diego State has scored 70.9 points per game and they have allowed 63.6 points against per game, while also averaging 35.4 rebounds and 13.1 assists per game this season. Nick Boyd is averaging 13.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, while Miles Byrd is averaging 12.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game this year. San Diego State is shooting 44.4% from the field, 66.6% on free throws, and 33.5% on three pointers this season.

San Diego State vs North Carolina Prediction 

There is a lot of controversy surrounding North Carolina and the legitimacy of them making this tournament, but there is no denying how well they are currently playing. The Tar Heels have won eight of their last ten games, with most of those wins coming by at least 10 points. San Diego State played very poorly in the second half in their last game against Boise State and their offense is a bit too inconsistent for my liking. I know UNC has a tendency to play poor defense, but I think their strong offense will be the difference. Take North Carolina here.

North Carolina Tar Heels Betting Preview

The Tar Heels had their ups and downs initially this season. That said, since mid-February North Carolina has been doing quite well in the win column. The Tar heels kicked things off on a 12-6 run over their first 18 outings. Those losses came versus Kansas, Auburn, Michigan State, Alabama, Florida and Louisville. The next seven games were a rocky 2-5 run featuring wins over only Boston College and Pitt. Otherwise it was losses to Stanford, Wake Forest, Pitt, Duke and Clemson. Since then however, the Tar Heels have just one loss, March 8 versus Duke. The wins otherwise were over Syracuse, NC State, Virginia, Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame and Wake Forest. In total that gives the Tar Heels a 22-12 run through 34 games so far this year.

On Thursday in the tournament matchup versus Wake Forest, the Tar Heels went into the second half with a two-point lead, then hit a 35-28 run from there for a 68-59 win in the end. Tops in scoring was RJ Davis with 23 points, three rebounds and one assist.

Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview

Over on the Duke side, they’ve had a great season so far, with only a few scattered losses on the card. The Blue Devils stumbled a bit early amid a tough opening, losing to Kentucky and Kansas in their first six games. A wins streak came next though, as Duke dispatched Seattle, Auburn, Louisville, Incarnate Word, George Mason, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, SMU, Pitt, Notre Dame, Miami, Boston College, Wake Forest, NC State, North Carolina and Syracuse. After a loss to Clemson, Duke has since hit another long win streak. Those victories have come over Cal, Stanford, Virginia, Illinois, Miami, Florida State, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Georgia Tech in succession. That gives the Blue Devils a 29-3 run through 32 games so far.

Matched up against Georgia Tech on Thursday, the Blue Devils were in trouble with a 31-26 halftime deficit. Duke woke up after halftime though, hitting a 52-39 run in the second for a comeback win 78-70 in the end. Kon Knueppel led the team with his 28 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. Khaman Maluach added 14 points with nine boards and four blocks, while Isaiah Evans came off the bench for 14 points with two rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Patrick Ngongba chipped in seven points with two rebounds off the bench as well.

Duke vs North Carolina Prediction

I’ll stick with Duke, but this should be a great matchup. Despite a bit of a slow start on Thursday, the Blue Devils posted a pretty solid showing in their win over Georgia Tech. Duke shot an okay 43.5 percent from the field and a very nice 17-of-19 (89.5 percent) from the line alongside a 38-31 rebounding advantage and just eight turnovers. The Blue Devils were pretty cold from outside though, hitting just seven of their 30 attempts (23.3 percent) during the victory. The 12 points off 11 Yellow Jackets turnovers certainly helped as well. That gives Duke nine straight wins, and they’ve scored 78 or more points in each one of those victories. We should see another nice total Friday.

These teams have faced each other twice this year, with Duke taking both games. First was an 87-70 result at home on February 1, then an 82-69 road win on March 8. In that latest outing, the Blue Devils shot a nice 56.4 percent from the field with a 39-26 rebounding edge but did have 14 turnovers. This third matchup likely won’t be so statistically lopsided, but I do like the Blue Devils to power it out in the end once again.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are shooting 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 75.6 percent from the free throw line. The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are allowing 30.5 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 30.2 rebounds per game.

Wake Forest vs North Carolina Injury Report

North Carolina doesn’t have a player listed on its injury report. Wake Forest will be without Marqus Marion, Vincent Ricchiuti, Mason Hagedorn, and Will Underwood.

Wake Forest vs North Carolina Prediction

North Carolina is getting the benefit of the doubt because it is the more talented team on paper and will have the advantage crowd wise. However, Wake Forest has had the better season and has the rest advantage. Wake Forest is also one of the better defensive teams in the country and could take advantage of a UNC team that’s on the end of a back-to-back. Wake Forest did beat North Carolina this season in the only meeting. North Carolina is the rightful favorite and is playing well recently, but the value is with Wake Forest and the points.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview

The Irish have been on a pretty rough run for most of the year, but they’ve played better lately to their credit. Notre Dame went 7-5 over their first 12 outings, taking losses to Elon, Rutgers, Houston, Creighton and Georgia during that time. losses to Georgia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Syracuse, Miami, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Louisville SMU, Clemson and Wake Forest came after that, mixed with wins over Boston College, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Boston College again and Pittsburgh. Since then it’s been three straight wins for the Irish. Those have come courtesy of Stanford, California and Pittsburgh. In total that gives the Irish a 15-17 overall run across 32 games overall this year.

On Tuesday versus Pitt, the Irish went into the second half with a three-point lead. Notre Dame managed to hang on after a 32-30 deficit from there and won 55-54. Tops in scoring was Tae Davis with his 11 points and five rebounds in 34 minutes of work.

North Carolina Tar Heels Betting Preview

Over on the Tar Heels’ side, they’ve had a couple of sketchy spots in the record column so far—specifically in November and January—but overall they’re looking pretty good. North Carolina lost just one of their first five games (versus Kansas), then fell to Auburn, Michigan State and Alabama in the next trio. A 4-2 run came next with losses to Florida and Louisville among wins over Georgia Tech, La Salle, UCLA and Campbell, then wins over Notre Dame, SMU, NC State and Cal. North Carolina would fall to Stanford, Wake Forest, Pitt, Duke and Clemson over the next seven, then took wins over Syracuse, NC State, Virginia, Florida State, Miami and Virginia Tech before another loss to Duke. In total that gives the Tar Heels a 20-12 overall run across 32 games so far this year.

In the Duke matchup over the weekend, the Tar Heels came out of the break with a one-point deficit 43-42. North Carolina didn’t get any closer from there on a 39-27 run and took the loss in the end 82-69. Topping the scorers in the home defeat was RJ Davis with 20 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Ven-Allen Lubin added 11 points with six rebounds, one steal and one block off the bench in 29 minutes. Ian Jackson chipped in eight bench points with one assist and one steal as well.

I’ll lean toward the Tar Heels. UNC needs a good bounce-back performance here after looking pretty limp against a great Duke team over the weekend, though. North Carolina shot just 39.1 percent from the field in that one with a 39-26 rebounding deficit and 56.4 percent shooting allowed on the other side. The good news is that the Tar Heels hit 10-of-11 free throws (90.9 percent) and had just six turnovers. The loss halts a six-game win streak for UNC, who had scored 81 or more points in each of those wins—and 91 or more in four of them.

These teams have met once this year, all the way back on January 4 in a 74-73 road win for the Tar Heels. North Carolina shot very well (52.9 percent) from the field in that one but also hit a tepid 28.6 percent (6-of-21) from 3-point range and had 13 turnovers for 10 Notre Dame points. The Tar Heels will face an Irish team that’s won three straight in the the rematch on Wednesday, but I think UNC will take care of business overall.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this year, but in the last few years, the home team has been the team that has found success.

North Carolina has had issues during the season, but they might just be heating up at the right time, as they have won five games in a row. Two games ago against Florida State, they won 96-85, and in the last game against Miami, they were able to secure a 92-73 victory. North Carolina shot 58.9 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from behind the three-point line. Ven-Allen Lubin put up 19 points and five rebounds. Six different players put up at least 11 points. That has been a big change as of late, there have been more players, especially off the bench that have stepped up. 

North Carolina has a 19-11 overall record, but it has gone 11-18-1 against the spread. It wants to push the pace, averaging 81.8 points per game, the 24th in the league. The defense has been a problem all year, and at this point, it seems they have resorted to hoping they have enough offense to come out ahead. Virginia Tech have not played well this season, but they are coming off a win in the last game. The Hokies faced off against Syracuse, and it took overtime, but they secured the 101-95 victory. Virginia Tech shot 60.7 percent from the field, which shows just how bad the defense was that the game was even close. Jaydon Young was the top player for Virginia Tech, and he scored 26 points, three assists, and zero rebounds. Five different players put up at least 10 points. Ben Hammon came off the bench and put up 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. 

VT has a 13-16 overall record and 13-16 against the spread. At home, they have gone only 8-8. The biggest issue for this team has been the defense; they are giving up 72.5 points per game. North Carolina is averaging 81.8 points per game, and they can get over their season average again here. The home-court advantage hasn’t been there this season for Virginia Tech, and they won’t magically break out here. The Tar Heels are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games. What a Bad Loss for Syracuse

It was a bad loss for Syracuse in the last game against the Miami Hurricanes. Syracuse scored 84 points but the defense gave up 91 points and that led to the defeat. Syracuse shot 45.5 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from behind the three-point line. JJ Starling had a strong gam,e putting up 25 points, five rebounds, and three assists. There were three different players that put up at least 14 points. In this game the offense will need to be good, but the defense will need to be a whole lot better. 

Syracuse overall sits with an 11-14 record overall and they have gone 12-12-1 against the spread. At home this season they have gone 9-5 straight up. Syracuse is averaging 74.6 points while their defense is giving up 78.2 points per game. The offense is ranked 169th while the defense is ranked 329th. JJ Starling deal with injuries but he’s back and he’s averaging 18.6 points while shooting 42.2 percent from the field. 

North Carolina Has Been Disappointing

North Carolina has been disappointing this season, and for a team that had so many expectations heading the year, they just haven’t lived up to the expectations. Two games ago against Pitt, they were able to secure a 67-66 victory, but in the last game against Clemson, they fell short. The offense managed 65 points while the defense gave up 85 points, and that led to the defeat. Even though they struggled as a team, RJ Davis did have a strong game putting up 18 points, two rebounds, and two assists. 

North Carolina currently has a 14-11 overall record and is 7-17-1 against the spread. Away from home this season, they have gone 3-6. North Carolina is averaging 80 points, while its defense is giving up 76.6 points per game. The offense is ranked 48th in the league, while the defense is ranked 308th. RJ Davis has been the biggest bright spot, averaging 17.4 points while shooting 40.7 percent from the field and 31.9 percent from behind the three-point line.

This game is going to be a shootout. North Carolina is averaging 80 points per game while their defense is giving up 76.6 points per game. I do believe Syracuse’s offense is going to jump out to a fast start, also, and that is going to be the difference here. North Carolina has dropped four of their last six games and they have struggled on the defensive end of the floor, as they are allowing 76.3 points per game. The Tar Heels are 0-3 in their last three road games and while I don’t think they will get the win here, I do think they can keep this one close. I expect a slow start from Clemson, but I do think the Tigers get a narrow win. Take North Carolina and the points here.
