Ball State Cardinals Betting Preview

Ball State has had a pretty uneven season thus far, and they’ve been floundering around the .500 mark for quite some time. The Cards opened on an 8-7 run with losses to Georgia State, Dayton, Indiana State, Detroit, Richmond, SIU Edwardsville, and Miami Ohio. A 2-5 stretch came after that, featuring wins over Central Michigan and Buffalo among losses to Ohio, Toledo, Northern Illinois, Western Michigan, and Akron. Since then the Cardinals have gone 4-4 in their last eight outings. Ball State has losses to Toledo, Akron, Bowling Green, and Central Michigan in that time alongside wins over Southern Miss, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois, and Buffalo. Over 30 games so far that gives Ball State a 14-16 record in total this season.

In the Central Michigan game on Tuesday, the Cardinals exited the first half with a 39-22 edge. The Cardinals were blitzed 47-28 the rest of the way however, resulting in a 69-67 defeat in the end. Jermahri Hill was the leading team contributor, posting 21 points with four rebounds and one assist in 31 minutes off the bench. Mickey Pearson was the top starter with 11 points and three rebounds in 29 minutes of work. Payton Sparks chipped in eight points with nine rebounds and three assists, while Juanse Gorosito had eight points with three rebounds and one assist in 31 minutes off the bench.

Over on the RedHawks’ side, they’ve been quite impressive overall this year with just one instance of consecutive losses. Miami-OH stumbled a bit in their first 10 though, taking losses to Wright State, Michigan, Indiana, and Vermont along the way. Wins over Sacred Heart, Defiance, Buffalo, Ball State, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Kent State, and Bowling Green came next, then a loss to Akron. Miami-OH would then beat Eastern Michigan, Ohio, Central Michigan, Troy, and Toledo. Since then it’s been a 3-3 run with losses to Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and Ohio among wins over Kent State, Northern Illinois, and Buffalo. In total that gives the RedHawks a 22-8 record across 30 games so far this year.

In the Buffalo road game back on Tuesday, the RedHawks entered the second half with a 47-35 edge. Miami-OH kept it up in the second half on a 37-34 run and took the win in the end 84-69. Peter Suder led the team with 15 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals. Luke Skaljac led the bench contributors with 14 points and four rebounds, while Reece Potter had 12 bench points, four rebounds, and two assists in 19 minutes of work. Antwone Woolfork chipped in 10 points with four rebounds and four steals as well.

I’ll lean toward Miami-OH. The RedHawks are looking good these days and coming off a strong road win over a struggling Buffalo team. Miami-OH shot a smooth 55.9 percent from the field and 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from 3-point range in that one, which overcame the 12 turnovers and 31-29 rebounding deficit. The RedHawks have been below 67 points in each of their last two losses, so hitting that 70-point mark here would be a good sign.

The last time these teams saw each other back on January 7, Miami-OH powered out an 80-72 road victory. The RedHawks shot very well (55.4 percent) in that one and had just seven turnovers. The 37-26 rebounding deficit was about the only blemish, but that won’t matter in the rematch if Miami-OH continues to shoot well.

I’m on the under in this game. These are two solid offenses in the MAC this season, but I really don’t think either side gets enough love and appreciation for their prowess on the defensive end of the floor. I look at this game and the effect it has on both teams in the MAC standings and I think you see more of a conservative matchup that ends up being a first-to-70-wins kind of game so I’m going to roll with the under in this game.

This year the RedHawks opened up with a 2-2 run with wins over App State and MD Eastern Shore alongside losses to Wright State and Michigan. It’s been three wins over Siena, Mercer, and Air Force since then, though.

On Monday versus Air Force, the RedHawks were down 30-29 going into the second half. Miami-OH hit a 44-30 run in the second however and won 73-60. Peter Suder was the star in that one with 42 points and three steals. Miami (OH) will face Vermont and Sacred Heart following this one. 

Indiana Hoosiers Betting Preview

Over on the Indiana side, they’ve got two losses so far to Louisville and Gonzaga. Otherwise, it’s been six wins over SIU Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois, South Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Providence, and Sam Houston.

I’ll lean toward Indiana here, even with the semi-hefty line. The Hoosiers shot a blistering 61.8 percent from the field in their last outing against Sam Houston, adding a nice 37-25 rebounding advantage and 18 team assists. That makes a combined 186 points in the last two games for Indiana, following a span of sub-70 points in two of three games.

As for Miami-OH, they got a huge lift from Suder in their win over Air Force but no one else finished in double-figures. That said, the RedHawks are on a roll right now with 70 or more points in three straight wins. They’ll need a few more scoring options in order to hang with Indiana cover-wise, though.

Air Force Falcons Betting Preview

The Air Force Falcons are 2-6 this season after they lost to Wright State by a score of 70-57 in their last game. Air Force trailed 36-23 at halftime, but they did tie Wright State at 34 in the second half. The Falcons shot 39.6% from the field, 25% on three-pointers, and 66.7% on free throws in the game. Ohio Bobcats Betting Preview

Ohio got off to a shaky 4-3 start this year, taking losses to Syracuse, Kentucky, and Miami-OH along the way. Since then, however, the Bobcats have won five straight games over Buffalo, Kent State, Eastern Michigan, Toledo, and Ball State.

Last Friday versus Ball State, the Bobcats scored in every quarter—including double-digits in the first and third—during a 42-21 win. QB Parker Navarro notched 169 pass yards and three scores with a pick while also leading the rush on 110 yards and two more TDs.

Miami-OH vs Ohio Prediction

I’m going to lean toward Ohio, but you could certainly make a case either way. This should be an excellent matchup. The last time these teams saw each other was back on October 19 in a 30-20 RedHawks win at Yager Stadium. The Bobcats had a couple of turnovers and a 150-110 deficit in rushing attempts but stats-wise both teams were pretty even. The major exception was Ohio’s 8-of-16 on third downs (and 22 first downs total) versus the RedHawks’ 2-of-10 success rate (and 15 first downs total). The Bobcats also got off to a very slow start and trailed 30-6 by the end of the third quarter.

Ohio has looked good over this five-game win streak, with 24 or more points in all five games and 35 or more in four of them. The defense has only given up more than 16 points once in that time (21 versus Ball State) as well. This Saturday’s matchup is going to take a complete effort on both sides of the ball (not to mention a much faster start) but I think the Bobcats can pull it off. Should be a great one to watch regardless.

I’m leaning towards Miami-Ohio here. I just feel like Miami-Ohio is the better team side-by-side, and while both are dependent on shooting the three and have been lackluster defensively, the RedHawks are a lot more consistent in terms of hitting their shots from long range and I think that variance benefits them here. Give me Miami-Ohio.

I’ll probably stick with Bowling Green. The Falcons didn’t have too many issues with a struggling Ball State team in their last outing. Bowling Green posted 362 yards (259 passing) along the way but did muster a tepid 7-of-17 on third downs with nine penalties. Still, Bowling Green is looking pretty good with five straight wins and 23 or more points in each.

Toledo had won the first three games of the season before they were knocked off in the last game against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. Keyon Mozee had a huge game on the ground finishing with nine carries for 114 yards and a touchdown. The offense for this team overall hasn’t been great. Toledo is going to put on a show in this game. Miami of Ohio’s offense is a major issue and it’s not going to magically get any better in this game. Oddsmakers clearly believe Miami-OH is better than what it’s shown up to this point. The Massachusetts Minutemen are the lesser talented team, obviously, but this line feels a bit off. Massachusetts has covered three straight games as a double-digit underdog, and one of those covers was an outright win. There’s much better ways to spend your Saturday, but if forced to pick, give me the points with the Minutemen.

Miami-OH RedHawks Betting Preview

The RedHawks faced off against a good Northern Illinois team in their opener this year. Miami-OH held a 3-3 tie at halftime but could only muster a field goal from there in a 13-6 defeat. QB Brett Gabbert notched 227 yards and two interceptions. Cade McDonald led the receivers on eight catches for 105 yards.

In game two versus Cincinnati, Miami-OH was within a touchdown going into the fourth quarter but couldn’t bridge the gap in a 27-16 loss. QB Brett Gabbert logged 339 yards, two scores, and a pick. Kevin Davis led an anemic rush with just 14 yards on three carries.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Betting Preview

Over on the Notre Dame side, they faced Texas A&M in their first outing of the season. The Irish had some bumps in the road but came away with a 23-13 win in the end. Game two versus Northern Illinois didn’t go quite so well; Notre Dame would fall in that one 16-14.

Back on Saturday versus Purdue, the Fighting Irish had few issues. Notre Dame jumped out to a 42-0 halftime lead and cruised to the win 66-7. Steve Angeli threw for 100 yards and two scores, but Riley Leonard and Jeremiyah Love did most of the damage on the scoreboard with four rush TDs between them.

Notre Dame vs Miami-OH Prediction

I’m going to take a stab at Miami-OH. Probably not touching it, though. The RedHawks had a nice passing attack going (356 yards) in the loss to Cincinnati, however, the team couldn’t rush the ball (24 yards) or stop the run (215 yards allowed) whatsoever. They’ve got their work cut out for them in practice this week.

As for Notre Dame, there wasn’t much to complain about in their mismatch victory over Purdue. The Irish posted 578 yards (362 rushing) and 27 first downs along the way. Miami-OH has almost no chance of winning this one, but I could see them powering out a cover if the Irish ease up after an early lead.

Cincinnati Recap

The Cincinnati Bearcats will be coming into this one off of their first loss of the season, evening their record at 1-1 after a 28-27 loss to Pitt last time out. After this game, Cincinnati will return home for their conference opener against Houston.

Bearcats Getting Strong QB Play Despite Loss

Brendan Sorsby has thrown for 681 yards and 5 touchdowns on 63.8% passing while Corey Kiner’s rushed for a team-high 200 rushing yards and Evan Pryor has 109 rushing yards as well on the year. Xzavier Henderson has a team-high 12 receptions for 181 yards while Joe Royer has 8 grabs for 138 yards as well. On defense, Mehki Miller has a team-high 12 total tackles while Cincinnati’s defense as a unit has combined for 5 sacks and Josh Minkins has the Bearcats’ lone interception so far this year.

The Miami-Ohio RedHawks come into this one looking to rebound from their season-opening 13-6 loss to Northwestern last time out. After this game, the RedHawks will head out on the road to take on Notre Dame.

RedHawks Trying To Spring Upset For Second Straight Year Vs. Cincy

In the loss to Northwestern, Brett Gabbert threw for 227 yards and 2 interceptions on 22 of 37 passing while Jordan Brunson rushed for a team-high 33 yards on 8 carries. Cade McDonald led the RedHawks with 8 receptions for 105 yards as well in the loss. On defense, Matt Salopek had a team-high 10 total tackles while Eli Blakey had 9 total tackles with a team-leading 6 solo tackles.

Miami-OH vs Cincinnati Prediction

This is a tough one, but this line has me leaning towards Miami-Ohio. I haven’t loved what I’ve seen from Cincinnati defensively, giving up 20 in their season opener to Towson before falling apart against Pitt. Miami-Ohio always has a tendency to get up for these games and I think they’re up for another upset of one of their big-boy rivals. Give me the RedHawks and the points.
