Stanford Cardinal Betting Preview

The Cardinal have had a couple of spotty runs in the record column so far this year. That said, they’re not doing too badly overall. Stanford kicked things off with six straight wins, then fell to Grand Canyon and Cal Poly before wins versus Utah Valley, Cal and Merrimack. A 2-4 stretch with wins over Virginia Tech and Virginia came next; the losses otherwise were versus Oregon, Clemson, Pitt and Wake Forest. The Cardinal would beat North Carolina, Miami, Florida State and Syracuse, then fell to SMU, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech and Duke (with a win over NC State) in the next five. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run with wins over Cal, Boston College and SMU preceding a loss to Notre Dame. In total over 30 games that gives the Cardinal a 19-11 overall record this year.

In the Notre Dame matchup on the road Wednesday, the Cardinal were up by three points at halftime. Stanford was outscored 35-30 the rest of the way however, leading to a 56-54 loss in the end. Topping the team in scoring was Maxime Raynaud with 20 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Ryan Agarwal added 12 rebounds, one assist, one steal and six points, while Jaylen Blakes had 13 points with three assists, two rebounds and two steals in the defeat. Benny Gealer led the bench scoring with his 11 points, five boards and one assist.

Over on the Cardinals’ side, they had a brief run of bad games way back in December, but aside from that it’s been a pretty great season for them. Louisville lost just one of their first half-dozen outings (versus Tennessee), then hit a 1-4 run with a win over UTEP among losses to Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Duke and Kentucky. A win streak over Florida State, Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, SMU and Wake Forest in succession came next, then a loss to Georgia Tech. Since then it’s been all wins over Boston College, Miami, NC State, Notre Dame, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Pitt and California. That gives the Cardinals a 24-6 record across their first 30 outings of the season so far.

In the California matchup back on Wednesday, the Cardinals came out of the locker room with a commanding lead 41-26. Louisville kept it going with 44 more points in the second half and took the eventual win 85-68. Terrence Edwards led the way on 35 points with four rebounds and one assist. Both J’Vonne Hadley (eight rebounds; two assists) and Chucky Hepburn (seven rebounds; five assists) scored 16 points apiece as well. Noah Waterman led the team off the bench with six points and six rebounds in 18 minutes of action on the floor.

I’m going to stay with Louisville. The Cardinals are on a tear right now and coming off another nice win over a middling California squad. Louisville bombed in 52.9 percent shooting from the field in that one, giving up just 29.6 percent on the other side. If there were blemishes they included the 20-6 deficit on the offensive glass and the 14 turnovers for 14 Bears points. Still, that makes eight straight wins for the Cardinals, with 71 or more points scored in each.

As for Stanford, they shot just 33.3 percent from the field in their latest loss to Notre Dame, but did give up just 35.4 percent on the other side. The Cardinal had been looking pretty good in three straight wins prior to that, however. That said, this will be a difficult road matchup and I don’t see Stanford keeping pace for too long.

California Golden Bears Betting Preview

California has had a couple of good runs in the record column overall this year, but not enough to put them above the .500 mark so far. The Golden Bears went 6-1 over their first seven games, then took losses to Missouri, Stanford, Cornell, San Diego State, Pitt, and Clemson in the next seven. A 5-4 run came next with losses to Virginia Tech, North Carolina, SMU, and Syracuse among wins over Virginia, NC State, Florida State, Miami, and NC State. Cal would then lose versus Wake Forest, Duke, Georgia Tech, Stanford, and SMU before another victory over Boston College. In total that gives California a 13-16 overall run across 29 games so far.

In the Boston College matchup over the weekend, the Golden Bears came out of the break with a 42-31 advantage. California kept the pace from there on a 40-40 run and took the win 82-71 in the end. Mady Sissoko was the team’s leading scorer, notching a double-double on 21 points with 15 rebounds and one steal in 29 minutes of action. Jovan Blacksher added 18 points with four assists and one rebound, while Andrej Stojakovic posted 15 points with five rebounds and four blocks in 34 minutes on the court during the victory.

Over on the Louisville side, they began their year on a pretty choppy run but since mid-December things have gone much better in the win column. The Cardinals limped to a 6-5 record across their first 11 outings of the season, then hit a winning streak over Florida State, Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, SMU, and Wake Forest. Following a loss to Georgia Tech on the road on February 1, Louisville began another win streak. Those victories came courtesy of Boston College, Miami, NC State, Notre Dame, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Pittsburgh. In total that gives the Cardinals a 23-6 overall run through 29 games so far this year.

Matched up against Pitt in the Saturday game, the Cardinals held a 39-33 edge by halftime. Louisville kept it up with a 40-35 run the rest of the way, eventually taking the win 79-68. Chucky Hepburn was the team’s leading scorer, pouring in 37 points with four rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 35 minutes. Terrence Edwards added 23 points with seven boards and one assist in 32 minutes, while Reyne Smith chipped in eight points with three rebounds in 35 minutes on the floor.

Louisville vs California Prediction

I’ll stick with Louisville here. The Cardinals are coming off something of an odd win over Pitt, posting just three bench points along the way. Louisville got the lion’s share of the production from just two players (Hepburn and Edwards), who combined for a whopping 60 of the team’s 79 points. It worked, though: Louisville shot a nice 51.1 percent from the field and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from 3-point range. The 12 turnovers for 17 Panthers points were just about the only statistical blemish. In any case, that makes seven straight wins for Louisville, with 71 or more points scored in each of those outings.

As for Cal, they got past a middling Boston College team pretty easily in their last appearance, shooting 49.2 percent from the field with a 40-36 rebounding edge. The Bears did have 13 turnovers for 14 Eagles points but did pretty well outside of that. The loss stops the losing streak at five games, but California does have a couple of tricky road matchups left on the schedule. I don’t think they’ll get too close in this one.

I’m on Louisville here. I just think that Louisville is the far better team in this matchup, and these are two teams that have trended in completely different directions since meeting a few months ago, and the Cardinals for me have quickly evolved into a team that could make a sustained run in the NCAA tournament when we get to that point in the year. The Panthers are on the bubble but I honestly don’t see them making it off of it and I think Louisville puts the hammer down at home in this game. Give me Louisville in this one.

In their Saturday matchup with Florida State, the Cardinals jumped out to a 45-31 halftime lead. Louisville posted a 50-44 deficit the rest of the way but still powered out the win 89-81 in the end. Chucky Hepburn led the team with 29 points, five steals, three rebounds, and two assists. J’Vonne Hadley doubled up on 18 points with 11 rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block in 38 minutes of work. Terrence Edwards had 16 points with two assists, and Reyne Smith added 11 points with three rebounds and one assist. Tops off the bench was Khani Rooths with six points and four boards in 15 minutes on the floor.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve had a few brief runs of solid play this year but otherwise, it’s been a struggle. The Hokies went 5-8 in their first 13 games, taking losses to Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Pitt, Saint Joseph’s, and Duke in that time. A 3-1 run came next with a loss to Stanford amid wins over Miami, Cal, and NC State. Virginia Tech would go just 3-6 over the next nine games with wins over Florida State, Virginia, and Notre Dame among losses to Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Clemson, SMU, Virginia, and Boston College. That would give the Hokies an 11-15 record through their first 26 outings of the year.

Matched up against Miami over the weekend, Virginia Tech went into the break with a 38-38 tie. The Hokies came back with a 43-30 run the rest of the way and powered out the win at the end 81-68, though. Virginia Tech’s Jaydon Young was the leading team scorer with 27 points, three assists, two steals, and two rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.

Virginia Tech vs Louisville Prediction

I’ll lean toward Louisville. The Cardinals are coming off a fairly even game versus Florida State. Both teams shot upwards of 50 percent, and Louisville had a modest 31-27 rebounding edge. Even the turnovers were comparable, but Louisville scored 17 points off 14 Seminoles turnovers and Florida State had just seven points off 13 Cardinals miscues. In any case, it was another solid home win that extends Louisville’s streak to five—and they’ve lost just one game since December 14 (Kentucky) in total. Louisville is scoring well also, with 75 or more points in all five of their current victories.

As for Virginia Tech, they didn’t have too many issues with a struggling Miami team over the weekend—even on the road. The Hokies shot a nice 52.5 percent from the field in that one and had just five turnovers, though they did get outfoxed mildly on the boards 31-29. Still, it was a nice total (81) following a miserable 36 points in the road loss to Boston College. That said, Virginia Tech will be in for another tough matchup here, and I don’t quite think they’ll keep pace with Louisville.

Louisville is one of the best teams in the ACC, and because of substantial work in the transfer portal this offseason, I believe they can make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Louisville has won four games in a row, and the offense has paced them to success. Two games ago, against NC State, they won 91-66; in the last game against Notre Dame, they came out in the top 75-60. Louisville shot 49.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from deep. All five starters finished with at least 10 points. Chucky Hepburn, one of the big offseason additions, led the team with 16 points, six assists, and two rebounds. 

The Cardinals have a 20-6 record overall, and they have gone 10-3 against the spread. Louisville has leaned on the offense all season, averaging 79.5 points, which is the 55th-best in college basketball. It’s clear the goal this offseason was to bring in three-point shooters, and the plan has worked as they are averaging 30.35 attempts per game, which is 5th in the league. Hepburn is averaging 15 points per game, shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 33.8 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Why Louisville Will Beat Florida

Last Few Games for Leonard Hamilton with Florida State

With Leonard Hamilton retiring at the end of the season, this is the last few games he has been in charge of. After a slow start to the season, Florida State has been playing better, and they have won three of the last four games. Given that it’s been against lower competition in the ACC, they might fall into that category. Florida State faced off against Miami on Wednesday, and they picked up the 74-66 victory. The Seminoles used 43 points in the second half. Malique Ewin had a strong game, putting up 24 points, five rebounds, and two assists. 

Florida State has a 16-10 overall record, but it has only two wins on the road. The defense has been inconsistent, but the offense has been making up for it lately. Florida State is averaging 75.3 points per game. They have also done a good job of getting to the free-throw line, averaging 16.58 free throws per game. Jamir Watkins is having a tremendous season, averaging 17.9 points while shooting 42.2 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Why Florida State Will Beat Louisville

• Louisville has lost eight of its last 10 home day games against the Atlantic Coast Conference.
• Florida State has won four of its last five day games against Louisville.
• The road team has won the first half in four of Louisville’s last five games.

The first game between these two teams had 90 points scored by Louisville, and there is no reason they can’t get close to that number again here. Florida State’s offense has been playing with all kinds of confidence, and the Seminoles are averaging 75.3 points per game. Three of the last four games played between this game have gone over. Louisville will be making those shots from deep, and that will be enough for this game to be a shootout. Louisville Can’t Slip Up

Louisville has had a solid season, but this really isn’t a game that they can slip up in. Two games ago against Miami, Louisville was able to secure the 88-78 victory and in the last game against NC State, they were able to pick up the win 91-66 victory. In the second half of the last game, they scored 50 points and that was enough for the 11-point victory. Terrence Edwards Jr put up 21 points, five assists, and four rebounds. There were four different players that put up at least 15 points. 

Louisville sits with a 19-6 record overall and they have gone 15-10 against the spread. Away from home this season they have gone 7-2 straight up. Louisville is averaging 79.7 points while their defense is giving up 69.3 points per game. The offense is ranked 54th in the league while the defense is ranked 99th. In this game, Louisville is going to need the offense to run up the score here, to really try to put the pressure on. This offense has a ton of confidence right now.

Can Notre Dame Pull off a Shocker?

Notre Dame has been nothing but a disappointment, but a win here would be quite impressive. Notre Dame has struggled overall this season, but they were able to pick up a victory in the last game. Notre Dame faced off against Boston College and the offense was impressive scoring 97 points, and that was enough for the victory. It took double overtime, but it was enough for the win. Guard Markus Burton had a strong game putting up 32 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. 

Notre Dame sits with an 11-13 record overall and they have gone 10-12-2 against the spread. Notre Dame is averaging 73.8 points while their defense is giving up 70.7 points per game. The offense is ranked 202nd in the league while the defense is ranked 151st in the league. The defense overall has been a problem and they are going to need the defense to be better here if they want any shot to come away with a win. Tae Davis has been the top player, averaging 15.8 points while shooting 45.2 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Notre Dame vs Louisville Prediction

Notre Dame won the last game, but don’t let that fool you, they are not a good team, and they are going to really struggle here. Louisville on the season is averaging 79.7 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. Notre Dame’s offense is averaging 73.8 points per game, but they aren’t going to even get close to that number against this Louisville offense. I’m with Louisville here. They’ll need to keep picking up wins to stay in the hunt and this is a great spot to do so against a reeling NC State team that has lost a few close games this season but has also taken a few bumps like losing to Clemson by double-digits. Louisville has had no problems beating up on the low end of the ACC table and I think they do so again here. Give me Louisville.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons Betting Preview

Wake Forest had a bit of choppy play back in November and December, but overall they’ve been a highly consistent team in the record column. The Demon Deacons have yet to lose consecutive games—but they’re at risk of it here if things don’t go well on the court. Wake Forest opened the season on a 9-4 run, losing to Xavier, Florida, Texas A&M and Clemson. The wins otherwise were versus Coppin State, North Carolina A&T, Michigan, USC Upstate, Western Carolina, Detroit, Minnesota, Boston College and James Madison. A win streak ensued over the next six games, featuring victories over Syracuse, NC State, Miami, Stanford, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina. Following a loss to Duke over the weekend, Wake Forest slipped to 15-5 overall through 20 games so far this year.

In the Duke game on Saturday, the Demon Deacons went into the locker room with a 35-22 deficit. Wake Forest came alive from there on a 34-28 run but didn’t get close enough in a 63-56 defeat. Leading the team in scoring was Juke Harris, who notched 14 points with five boards and one steal in 27 minutes of work off the bench. Tops among the starters was Hunter Sallis with his 12 points, four turnovers, and seven rebounds in 40 minutes on the floor.

Over on the Louisville side, they’ve similarly had a very consistent run so far this year—outside of a rough 1-4 stretch back in December, that is. Outside of that span, the Cardinals have only one loss in the books. That defeat came versus Tennessee in game two during a 5-1 start that had wins over Morehead State, Bellarmine, Winthrop, Indiana, and West Virginia otherwise. Louisville lost to Oklahoma, Duke, Ole Miss, and Kentucky with a win over UTEP in the next five outings. Since then it’s been wins over Florida State, Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, and SMU in succession for a 15-5 record as well though the first 20 outings of the 2024-25 campaign.

Matched up against SMU last Tuesday, the Cards surged to a 50-27 edge by the break. Louisville kept the pace up in the second half, rolling to a 48-46 advantage along the way to a 98-73 blowout victory. Reyne Smith led the team with 30 points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Both J’Vonnne Hadley (seven rebounds) and James Scott (two rebounds; two blocks) had 16 points apiece, while Chucky Hepburn chipped in 13 points with 16 assists for a double-double in the victory.

I’ll stay with the Cardinals. Louisville took care of a good SMU team pretty easily in their last outing, hitting 46.3 percent from the field with a 41-33 rebounding advantage and just seven turnovers. On defense, the Cardinals held the Mustangs to just 40.4 percent shooting and scored 10 points off 11 turnovers. That makes nine straight wins for Louisville. They’ve scored 70 or more points in 11 straight games (a 10-1 run) as well.

As for Wake Forest, they held Duke to just 36.8 percent shooting and scored 12 points off 16 Blue Devils turnovers. The problem? The Deacons shot just 37.3 percent from the field themselves with only 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from outside. The eight missed free throws from 23 opportunities (65.2 percent) didn’t help either. Wake Forest has scored a combined 123 points in their last two games, but they’re normally a better offense than that. Still, going up against a tricky Louisville team at KFC will be a tall order—even for a talented team like Wake.

I’m with Louisville here. The Cardinals have really shown signs that they’ve improved in a lot of their recent games, as they’ve managed to go 4-0 SU in conference road games so far. I know the ACC may not be as strong as in past seasons, but there are still some tough teams to go through, and Louisville has shown they’re up to the task. I’m not all that enthused with SMU’s recent games and while they’ve been decent at home, catching the Cards in the underdog/coin-flip role is too good for me to pass on here. Give me Louisville.

Down Year for Virginia

It has been a down year for Virginia and they are coming off another loss in the last game. Virginia faced off against SMU and they scored 52 points and even though they gave up only 54 points it sti ll wasn’t enough as they ended up losing. Virginia shot only 34.6 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from behind the three point line. Blake Buchanan was the top player putting up 11 points, 15 rebounds, and two assists.

I’m with Louisville in this one. I was a little bit skeptical about Louisville early on this season, as the Cardinals really had trouble with winning step-up games and adjusting to Pat Kelsey’s style of play as the new head coach as his style involves a lot of outside shooting, and the shots just weren’t falling. However, they have started to fall over the course of conference play, and it’s resulted in Louisville finding themselves in the best stretch of the ball they’ve played all season. Syracuse has gotten a boost from JJ Starling coming back from injury, but two wins over two of the worst teams in the conference doesn’t really move the needle for me with this team and I think that the Cardinals get the job done on the road here. Give me Louisville.

Pittsburgh Panthers Betting Preview

Clemson Has Confidence

Clemson has confidence heading into this game and they have won three games in a row. In the last game against the California Golden Bears, Clemson scored 80 points but the defense gave up only 68 points and that led to the 12-point victory. Clemson shot 62 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from behind the three-point line. Ian Schiefflan put up 21 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Two games ago against Stanford, Clemson was able to secure an 85-71 victory. 

Clemson is averaging 78.5 points while their defense is giving up 66.9 points per game. The offense is ranked 107th in the league while the defense is ranked 73rd. They are shooting over 37 percent from deep which is 38th in the league. Guard Chase  Hunter is averaging 17.3 points while shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 42.2 percent from behind the three-point line. In this game, Clemson needs the offense to be good early. Clemson will take on Florida State and Georgia Tech after this game.

Louisville Dominated the Last Game

Louisville faced off against Virginia in the last game and it was a tough matchup on the road, but they had no issue getting the job done. The defense gave up only 50 points and they ended up winning by 20 points. Louisville’s defense held Virginia to only 15 percent from deep. Two games ago against North Carolina, the offense scored 82 points against North Carolina and that was enough for the 12-point victory.

Chucky Hepburn transferred in from Louisville, and he is having a huge season, averaging 15.5 points while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 32 percent from behind the three-point line.

Clemson is good, but what Louisville’s defense did in the last game was quite impressive, and I expect they are going to continue that success here. They gave up only 50 points in the last game and the defense is going to step up in a big way here. Clemson’s offense is going to have some major issues getting anything going here. Look for another big game from Chucky Hepburn and that will end up being the difference here as Louisville will come out on top. Back Louisville against the spread.
