LSU is Ice Cold

LSU is ice-cold heading into this game, and they have lost five games in a row. In the last game gainst Texas A&M, LSU scored 52 points while the defense gave up 66 points. At halftime, they were actually up 32-30, but in the second half, the offense scored only 20 points, and that led to the defeat. LSU shot only 30 percent from the field and 26.9 percent from behind the three-point line. Guard Jordan Sears was the only bright offensive player, putting up 21 points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

LSU sits with a 14-17 record overall, and at this point, they are trying to play spoiler unless they can keep winning all the way to the SEC Championship because that’s the only way they are getting in. LSU wants to keep the pace up, but the defense has not made many stops. The Tigers are averaging 74.2 points, while their defense is giving up 73 points per game. Guard Cam Carter is having a strong season, averaging 16.5 points while shooting 42.8 percent from the field and 39.6 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Mississippi State is Suddenly Struggling

Mississippi State is suddenly struggling and they have lost two straight games. Two games ago against Texas, they lost 87-72, and in the last game against Arkansas, they lost 93-82. At halftime, they were down by a point, and even though they scored 48 points in the second half, it still wasn’t enough.  Mississippi State shot 43.8 percent from the field but only 37.5 percent from deep, which was the difference in the victory. Claudell Harris Jr was the top player for Mississippi State, and he scored 18 points and two rebounds. 

Mississippi State comes into this game with a 20-11 record overall. This feels like a team that can run up the score against anyone and make a run in the NCAA Tournament. It could also be bounced in the first round, and neither would be all that shocking. Mississippi State is averaging 79.6 points while its defense is giving up 74.2 points per game. Josh Hubbard has been the top player, averaging 18.3 points. 

Why Mississippi State Will Beat LSU

LSU’s defense is giving up 73 points per game, and they will struggle to defend again here. Josh Hubbard and company are a balanced offensive team, and they will have no issue running up the score. Mississippi State will go over their season average, and LSU won’t have the offense to keep this game close. This is a game they can win by 20 points. Back Mississippi State against the spread. Don’t forget Texas A&M recently losing at home to Vanderbilt as an eight-point favorite. It’s senior night for an LSU roster that has a lot of experienced players. I’m on Kentucky in this game. The standings may not say it, but I still am of the belief that LSU is the worst team in the SEC. And the Tigers have had some real issues going on the road and taking care of business or at least remaining competitive. Kentucky is coming off of a humiliating loss to Auburn on their home floor, and I think in their regular season home finale, they’ll want to make amends and get back on track. Kentucky usually takes care of business at home against inferior competition and I think they do so again here. Give me the Wildcats laying the big number.

The Bulldogs are currently ranked #24 in the country, but they haven’t been great over the last four weeks. LSU has won two of their last three games and they had a halftime lead against Florida, but they were blown out in the second half for the loss. The Tigers are allowing 72.5 points against per game this year and they only have three conference wins on the season. LSU looks like they are showing a little improvement over the last two weeks, but I can’t trust them to score consistently against this Tennessee defense. Take the Vols on the road.

Florida Gators Betting Preview

Florida is doing great this year record-wise, with only a few scattered losses in the books so far. The Gators opened with wins over South Florida, Jacksonville, Grambling, Florida State, Florida A&M, Southern Illinois, Wake Forest, Wichita State, Virginia, Arizona State, North Carolina, North Florida and Season before a loss to Kentucky on January 4. A 5-2 run came next with losses to Missouri and Tennessee among wins over Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas, South Carolina and Georgia. Since then the Gators have rattled off another five straight wins. They’ve taken out Vanderbilt, Auburn, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Oklahoma during that time, giving the Gators a 23-3 overall run through their first 26 games of the season so far.

In the Oklahoma matchup on Tuesday, the Gators came out of the locker room sporting a 46-24 halftime edge. Florida kept the pace from there on a 39-39 run and took the victory 85-63 without too much trouble. The Gators’ lead scorer was Walter Clayton with 18 points, four boards and two assists. Will Richard added 14 points with eight rebounds and two steals, while Alijah Martin put up 14 points with five rebounds and two steals off the bench.

LSU Tigers Betting Preview

Over on the LSU side, they were looking great in late December but they’ve run into all sorts of trouble during this calendar year. The Tigers went 11-2 to start things off though, taking out LA Monroe, Alabama State, Kansas State, Charleston Southern, Central Florida, Northwestern State, Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast, Stetson, New Orleans and MS Valley State in that time. Since then however, LSU has wins over only Arkansas, Oklahoma and South Carolina. Otherwise it’s been losses to Vanderbilt, Missouri, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama, Auburn, Texas, Georgia, Ole Miss and Arkansas in succession. In total that gives the Tigers an overall record of 14-12 through their first 26 games of the season.

Matched up against South Carolina in their Tuesday outing, the Tigers held a comfortable 41-27 advantage by halftime. LSU kept it up in the second on an even 40-40 run and powered out the home win 81-67 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Cam Carter with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals. Mike Williams added 13 points with one rebound in 14 minutes off the bench, while Vyctorius Miller put up 12 points with four assists and two steals.

Why the LSU Tigers will win

• LSU has won 12 of its last 15 day games at Pete Maravich Assembly Center following a home win.
• The home team has won the first half in four of LSU’s last five games.

Why the Florida Gators will win

LSU vs Florida Prediction

I’m going to stay with Florida in this one. The Gators are cooking right now during this five-game win streak and they’re coming off another nice win over a pretty decent Oklahoma squad. Florida shot a solid 45.2 percent from the field in that one with 36 rebounds, 13 team assists and just six turnovers. On the other side the Gators gave up just 38.8 percent shooting and scored 18 points off 13 Sooners miscues. That gives Florida 81 or more points in each of the last five games, so they’re clicking on all cylinders offensively these days.

As for LSU, they’re coming off a well-rounded win themselves over South Carolina. The Tigers posted 50 percent shooting in that one with 23 points off 18 Gamecocks turnovers. LSU did give up 47.1 percent shooting and got out-rebounded 32-28, though. Still, the Tigers have scored a combined 163 points in their last two games (both wins). LSU will need to keep that offense hot if they’re going to stay in cover territory here, and I don’t think they’ll quite do it. We may have a fairly close game most of the way, though.

The LSU Tigers aren’t a world-beater and have issues of their own, but we’re laying less than a full bucket to fade a South Carolina team that hasn’t won a game since December 30. LSU is coming off a huge upset road win over Oklahoma, which is the type of win that could lead to a strong finish these next couple of weeks. LSU has seen 10 of its 13 wins this season come at home. South Carolina has shown nothing during this insane losing stretch to give confidence to bettors. Give me LSU and the surprisingly small chalk.

Arkansas shot 43.1 percent from the floor while they allowed Alabama to shoot 54.998 percent from the field. It’s actually impressive they kept it that close. 

Arkansas sits with a 14-9 record overall and they have gone 8-14-1 against the spread. At home, straight up, they have gone 9-4. Arkansas is averaging 77 points, while their defense is giving up 69.4 points per game. The offense is ranked 104th in the league while the defense is ranked 106th. In this game, if Arkansas wants to find success, they are going to need to take advantage of a team that doesn’t have confidence and get out of a fast start.

LSU Tigers Betting Preview

This year the Tigers kicked off their season on a pretty impressive run, but they’ve also had some issues over the last two outings. LSU beat LA-Monroe, Alabama State, Kansas State and Charleston Southern in their first four outings consecutively before a loss to Pittsburgh. The Tigers would regain their form with wins over UCF, Northwestern State, Florida State and Florida Gulf Coast in the next four games before another loss to SMU. Another winning streak commenced after that as LSU took out Stetson, New Orleans and Mississippi Valley State. Since then it’s been consecutive losses, however. Those have come versus Vanderbilt and Missouri, giving LSU an 11-4 overall record so far this season.

In the Missouri matchup on Tuesday, the Tigers came out of the break looking up at a rough 42-27 deficit on the scoreboard. LSU got better in the second half (but still got outscored) on a 41-40 run in an eventual loss 83-67. Leading the team in scoring was Cam Carter with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Curtis Givens added 15 points with one rebound and one assist, while both Daimion Collins (five rebounds) and Dji Bailey (four assists; three rebounds; two steals) chipped in 11 points apiece. Corey Chest added seven points as well for LSU in the losing effort.

Ole Miss Rebels Betting Preview

Over on the Ole Miss side, they have been a highly consistent team so far this year, with only a couple of blemishes on the card. The Rebels took out Long Island University, Grambling, South Alabama, Colorado State, Oral Roberts and BYU in their first six outings. Ole Miss’ first loss came on November 29 versus Purdue, then came another string of wins. Those victories came against Louisville, Lindenwood, Southern Miss, Southern and Queens. Ole Miss took their second loss of the season against Memphis on December 28, but bounced back with consecutive wins over Georgia and Arkansas in the next pair for a 13-2 overall run so far.

Sean Pedulla added 16 points with three assists in 35 minutes of work, and Dre Davis also finished in double-figures with 10 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. Leading the bench scorers was Eduardo Klafke with five points and two rebounds.

I’ll lean toward Ole Miss I suppose, but this should be a pretty solid matchup overall. The Rebels looked pretty good in a road win over a solid Arkansas team in their last outing, hitting 46 percent shooting from the field and 36 rebounds alongside just five turnovers. The foul shooting wasn’t great though, as Ole Miss whiffed on 10 of their 28 free throws (64.3 percent). Still, it was a nice return to form on the scoreboard following a tepid 63 points in the win over Georgia.

As for LSU, they didn’t shoot horribly (42.6 percent) in the loss to Missouri, but they also got outmuscled on the boards 37-29 and had 14 turnovers for 20 Missouri points. The Tigers have given up a combined 163 points in their last two games but overall they’re scoring well on the other side. LSU has the capability to stay in range here, even during a tricky road matchup. That said, Ole Miss is the superior team and should be able to power out a cover if they play well. It’ll be a fun one to watch regardless of the outcome.

The LSU Tigers have struggled when stepping up in competition, and that includes recent blowout losses to SMU and Vanderbilt. The Missouri Tigers are unbeaten at home, and they’re in a bounce-back spot after coming up small against Auburn. LSU has failed to cover four of its last six games. Missouri is really solid at home, and I’m not convinced LSU can step up in spots like this on the road. Missouri will run away with things in the second half if the offense continues to shoot high percentages across the board. LSU has issues shooting the three-ball this season. I’m going to back Vanderbilt here. I liked this line a lot better when Vandy opened as an underdog, but I think everyone’s seeing what I see with Vandy that this is a really good team under Mark Byington. LSU’s a solid team as well, and you can see the positive direction that Matt McMahon has this team going in, but Vandy has been so good at taking care of the rock as well as forcing turnovers that I think that the Commodores do enough to grab the win on the road here. Give me Vanderbilt.

Can Baylor Finish Season Strong

Baylor has eight wins this season and they are going to be looking to finish this season off strong. The last game for Baylor came all the way back on November 30th and they were able to knock off the Kansas Jayhawks 45-17. The offense scored 21 points in the third quarter and that helped push them to a win. Sawyer Robertson completed 23 of his 31 passes for 310 yards and four touchdowns. Bryson Washington had a strong game rushing 28 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns. Monray Baldwin had a huge game catching seven passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. One issue for Baylor heading into this game is they are going to be without both starting tackles who have opted out for the NFL draft. Baylor on the season is averaing 34.7 points while their defense is giving up 25.2 points. The offense is ranked 20th in the league while the defense is ranked 68th. 

How Motivated is LSU?

With teams like LSU and Alabama are playing in a non college football playoff game, here has to be questions about how motivated they will be. LSU finished the regular season with an 8-4 record but they have won each of the last two games. In the last game against Oklahoma, LSU scored 37 points and they ended up winning by 20 points. Garrett Nussmeier completed 22 of his 31 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns. While other quarterbacks have opted out, Nussmeier has decided to return to LSU next year and will play in this game. LSU on the season is averaging 29.3 points while their defense is giving up 23.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 54th while the defense is ranked 56th. 

LSU vs Baylor Prediction

Give me LSU here. There is some concern about motivation but Nussmeier is back and that is going to really help the offense. Baylor missing their two starting tackles on offense is going to be a major problem. LSU’s defense is going to have no issue getting pressure on Baylor and that is going to be the difference here. LSU is going to end up cruising here. Back LSU against the spread.
