The Cincinnati Bearcats (19-15, 15-17-2 ATS) concluded the regular season with three defeats in a row and entered the Big 12 tournament as the No. 13 seed. The Bearcats beat Oklahoma State in the first round but had no chance against Iowa State in the second round. At the CBC, Cincinnati had no trouble against DePaul in the opening round, winning 83-61.

DePaul Made it to a Tournament!

Heading into the season, there was not many expectations about this team, and they still finished with a losing record, but they have to take it as a win that they were even invited to this. DePaul headed into the Big East Tournament as a 10 seed, and in the last game, they were knocked off by Creighton. They were able to force double overtime, but they just ran out of gas late. Layden Blocker was the top player putting up 25 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Three different players put up at least 10 points. 

DePaul has a 14-19 overall record, averaging 72.8 points per game. The defense has been the biggest issue, and they are giving up 74.8 points per game. CJ Gunn has been the top player, averaging 12.8 points while shooting 42.9 percent from the field.

A Down Year for Cincinnati

It’s all about perspective, and from Cincinnati’s standpoint, it has been a disappointing year, even though they sit with an 18-15 record. Cincinnati’s last game was against the Iowa State Cyconles, and it was an ugly one. The offense only managed 56 points, while the defense gave up 76 points, and that led to the defeat. At halftime, they were down by nine points, and in the second half, it didn’t get any easier. Guard Jizzle James was the top player putting up 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists. 

Cincinnati is averaging 70.5 points on the season while its defense is giving up 65.7 points per game. They leaned on the defense, which is 26th in the league. James has been the top player overall, averaging 12.8 points while shooting over 40 percent from the field.

It might not be a popular play, but I believe DePaul is going to keep this game close. DePaul really looked like they were about to knock off a very good Creighton team in the last game, and I expect their defense is going to be strong again. Cincinnati is averaging 70.5 points per game, and their offense just isn’t going to be good enough here. Will the favorites win? Probably, but this is just way too many points. DePaul’s defense will keep them in it until the last couple of possessions.

Dillon Mitchell also put up 18 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists. 

The Bearcats are averaging 70.5 points, while their defense is giving up 65.3 points per game. While the team’s offense has been inconsistent this season, it’s been the defense that they have leaned on most of the season. Jizzle James has been the top player, averaging 12.9 points while shooting 41.9 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Iowa State Has Big Dreams

Iowa State has some big dreams this season, and they are coming off another strong win. Iowa State went on the road and gave up only 57 points against Kansas State, and they ended up winning by 166 points. Iowa State’s offense was solid, but even more impressive was the defense. They allowed Kansas State to shoot only 37.7 percent from the field and only 9.5 percent from deep. Kansas State hit only two of their 21 shots from behind the arc. Curtis Jones had a strong game, putting up 24 points, rebounds, and five assists. 

Iowa State sits with a 23-8 record overall. The Cyclones are averaging 80.1 points, while their defense is giving up 67.5 points per game. The defense is often talked about for this team, but this offense is elite and can’t be overlooked. Curtis Jones has been the top player for Iowa State, averaging 17 points while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Cincinnati vs Iowa State Prediction

There are a couple of factors that are going to play into this game, but the two that are most important will be all the differences, rest, and talent. Cincinnati had their game on Tuesday, and although it was a comfortable win, it will still be the second game in as many days. Iowa State has already proven they know how exactly to run up the score against Cincinnati, and they will do it again here. Curtis Jones is the top player, but this is such a balanced offensive attack. The Bearcats aren’t going to be keeping up, and Iowa State will cruise. Back Iowa State against the spread.

Cincinnati Bearcats Betting Preview

Cincinnati stormed out of the gate at the start of the season, but since late December they’ve been struggling in the win column. The Bearcats opened on a great 10-1 run though, falling to only Vilanova on December 3 during that stretch. Losses to Kansas State, Arizona, Baylor, and Kansas came in the next four outings, then wins over Colorado and Arizona State. Cincinnati would go 5-6 in the next 11 games, taking wins over UCF, BYU, Utah, TCU, and Baylor among losses to Texas Tech, BYU, Utah, West Virginia, Iowa State, and West Virginia again otherwise. Since then it’s been three straight losses for the Bearcats versus Houston, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State. In total that gives Cincinnati a 17-14 overall run across 31 games this year.

In the Oklahoma State road matchup over the weekend, Cincinnati came out of the break sporting a 44-36 deficit. The Bearcats didn’t end up getting any closer than that on a 34-31 run the rest of the way and took the loss 78-67 in the end. Tops in scoring during the losing effort was Jizzle James with 17 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Dan Skillings came off the bench for 15 points, four assists, and two steals in 28 minutes of action, and Day Day Thomas added 12 points with five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 35 minutes.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview

Over on the Oklahoma State side, they’ve had quite the choppy year overall and haven’t been able to stay above the .500 mark so far. The Cowboys opened on a reasonable 8-3 run though, falling to FAU, Nevada, and Oklahoma during that time. Losses to Houston, West Virginia, Utah, BYU, Arizona, Texas Tech, and Kansas State came in the next nine games (among wins over Kansas State and Colorado), then a 3-3 stretch with wins over Utah, Arizona State, and UCF alongside losses to Houston, TCU and Texas Tech. Since then it’s been a 2-3 run with wins over Iowa State and Cincinnati among losses to Kansas, Baylor, and UCF. In total that gives the Cowboys a 15-16 record across their first 31 games this year.

In the Cincinnati matchup on Saturday, Oklahoma State slowed down a bit in the second half but everything worked out well in the end during the 78-67 win. The Cowboys’ leading scorer was Abou Ousmane with 24 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. Bryce Thompson added 16 points with three rebounds in 33 minutes. The only other player on the team to finish in double-figures was Marchelus Avery with 10 points, two assists, one steal, and one block in 23 minutes of action off the bench during the victory.

I’m going to take a stab at Cincinnati, but you could call this one either way pretty easily. If both teams play to their capabilities we’ll have a great matchup. The Bearcats do need a good bounce-back effort from Saturday’s game, where they shot just 40.6 percent from the field with a 41-37 rebounding deficit, 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from the line, and 13 turnovers in the loss. Cincinnati gave up 46.8 percent shooting from the field and hit only seven of their 28 attempts from 3-point range (25 percent). There’s lots to clean up in this rematch. The Bearcats aren’t scoring well lately either with fewer than 70 points in four straight games (a 1-3 run).

As for Oklahoma State, they’ll be confident coming into this one but they’ve also been giving up a lot of points in their losses lately. If Cincinnati can get the offense going (and avoid mistakes) I think the Bearcats will power out some revenge in this tournament matchup.

TCU Horned Frogs Betting Preview

The Frogs have had quite the choppy year overall so far. That said, TCU has been doing much better since February began. The team’s first 17 games were a 10-7 run, featuring losses to Michigan, Santa Clara, Colorado State, Vanderbilt, Arizona, Houston and Utah. The wins otherwise were over Florida A&M, Florida Gulf Coast, Texas State, Alcorn State, Xavier, South Alabama, Montana State, Kansas State, BYU and Baylor. Three more losses to Kansas, UCF and Texas Tech came next. Since then the Frogs have been on a 5-1 run with a lone loss to Iowa State. TCU has otherwise taken out Colorado, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and Texas Tech in that time. Overall that gives the Horned Frogs a 15-11 record so far through their first 26 games of the 2024-25 season.

On Tuesday in their matchup with Texas Tech, TCU kept their run going with an upset victory at home. The Frogs were up 36-28 by halftime, then hit a 38-33 second half run for a tight win 69-66 in the end. Noah Reynolds led the starters with 16 points and three boards with one assist, while Ernest Udeh doubled up on 11 points, 10 boards, one assist and one steal. Trazarien White posted a nice game off the bench with 16 points, four rebounds, one assist, two steals and one turnover in 27 minutes of work during the victory effort.

Over on the Bearcats’ side, they had a rough run going in January but aside from that they’ve been pretty good in the record column thus far. Cincinnati kicked things off with a nice 10-1 run featuring wins over AR-Pine Bluff, Morehead State, Nicholls, Northern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Alabama State, Howard, Xavier, Dayton and Grambling. a 2-8 run came next with losses to Kansas State, Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, Texas Tech, BYU, Utah and West Virginia among wins over Colorado and Arizona State otherwise. Wins over UCF, BYU and Utah came next, then a loss to Iowa State. That gave the Bearcats a 15-10 run through their first 25 games this year.

On Wednesday versus West Virginia, Cincinnati was down 29-27 by halftime. The Bearcats didn’t end up getting any closer on a 33-32 run and lost the game in the end 62-59. Leading the team in the losing effort were Jizzle James and Day Day Thomas, each with 13 points.

I’ll stay with Cincinnati, but you could call this one either way. The Bearcats need a good bounce-back here following their latest loss as well. On Wednesday versus West Virginia, Cincinnati did well on defense, holding the Mountaineers to just 40 percent shooting. The Bearcats didn’t shoot all that well themselves though (41 percent) and missed four of their seven free throws (28.6 percent). WVU conversely hit 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) from the line, which was a key factor in the loss. Cincinnati has now lost consecutive games, and they’ve been below 67 points in four of their last five losses.

As for TCU, they’re riding high after their big win over a great Texas Tech team. The Frogs didn’t shoot all that great in the victory (41.4 percent) but they were solid on the boards with a 37-29 advantage (15-7 offensive) that helped offset the Raiders’ 49.1 percent shooting from the field. TCU has three straight wins in the bag with 69 or more points in each. That said, I like Cincinnati to stand tall at home and fend them off. Should be a great one to watch regardless.

Cincinnati Bearcats Betting Preview

The Bearcats had a very rough run going back in January. Aside from that however, Cincinnati has been quite the consistent team in the record column and they’re having a good year. During their 10-1 opening run, the Bearcats fell to only Villanova, taking out Arkansas Pine Bluff, Morehead State, Nicholls State, Northern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Alabama State, Howard, Xavier, Dayton and Grambling otherwise during that time. Cincinnati hit the skids on a 2-8 run from there, beating only Colorado and Arizona State. Otherwise it was losses to Kansas State, Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, Texas Tech, BYU, Utah and West Virginia during that time. The Bearcats have gotten back on track with wins over their last three games, though. Those victories have come in succession versus UCF, BYU and Utah. In total that gives the Bearcats a 15-9 overall record through their first 24 games of the year so far.

In the Utah matchup on Tuesday, the Bearcats hit a 42-36 opening run in the first half. Cincinnati closed with a 43-39 stretch from there in an eventual win 85-75 in the end. The Bearcats’ leading scorer was Jizzle James with his 25 points, six assists and two rebounds. Aziz Bandaogo managed to double up with 10 points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Josh Reed led the bench scorers with 13 points and four rebounds, while Simas Lukosius chipped in with 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 27 minutes of work on the floor.

Iowa State Cyclones Betting Preview

Over on the Iowa State side, they suffered a three-game losing streak that stretched into the early part of this month. Other than that however, the Cyclones have been pretty dominant overall. Iowa State’s lone loss during a 15-1 start was versus Auburn on November 25. Otherwise it was wins over MS Valley State, Kansas City, IUPUI, Dayton, Colorado, Marquette, Jackson State, Iowa, Omaha, Morgan State, Colorado, Baylor, Utah, Texas Tech and Kansas in succession during that time. A spotty 2-4 run came next with a pair of wins over UCF and Arizona State among losses to West Virginia, Arizona, Kansas State and Kansas. Since then Iowa State has gotten back on track with consecutive wins over TCU and UCF, giving the Cyclones a 19-5 overall record so far through the first 24 games of the season.

Matched up against UCF on Tuesday in their latest outing, the Cyclones held a modest two-point advantage after the first half. Iowa State hit a 45-35 run in the second half however, eventually powering out a 77-65 win in the end. Tops in scoring was Keshon Gilbert with 15 points, seven boards, four assists and one steal. Joshua Jefferson added 13 points with eight boards and four assists alongside one steal and one block. Curtis Jones paced the team off the bench, providing 10 points with six rebounds and five assists in 27 minutes of work.

I’ll stick with Iowa State. The Cyclones started modestly in their latest road win over UCF but ended up looking pretty good in the end. Iowa State hit 45.8 percent from the field in that one alongside a 41-32 rebounding advantage. The 11 turnovers for 10 UCF points were just about the only blemish to complain about. Following a pair of losses with just 113 combined points (to Kansas State and Kansas), the Cyclones have now scored 159 combined points in a pair of wins during their last two outings.

As for Cincinnati, they’ve scored 84 or more points in three straight games (all wins). The Bearcats will have their hands full in a tough road matchup Saturday however, and I don’t think they’ll quite get there.

One thing we know about this UCF team is that they can really score, but their defense has proven to be an issue at times, and that has to be a concern heading into this game. In the last game against BYU, the offense scored 75 points, but the defense gave up 81 points and that led to the defeat. UCF shot only 37.1 percent from the field while they allowed BYU to shoot 48.3 percent from the field. 

UCF comes into this game with a 13-8 record overall and they have gone 11-10 against the spread. The over has hit in 12 of the games so far this season. UCF is averaging 79.6 points, while their defense is giving up 78.8 points per game. The offense is ranked 63rd in the league while the defense is ranked 76th. This is a team that gets a ton of shots up, and they are 34th in the league in terms of shots per game. Keyshawn Hall is averaging 18.1 points while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from behind the three-point line. Early stops in this game are going to be key to coming away with a victory. 

Must win for Cincinnati?

As Cincinnati has been up and down in the Big 12, this feels almost like a must-win as they try to improve their stock for the NCAA tournament. Cincinnati has lost four games in a row and three of the games weren’t all that close. Two games ago against Utah was the closest and even that one they lost 69-66. In the last game against West Virginia, the offense only managed 50 points, and that led to the defeat. The Bearcats shot only 31.5 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from behind the three-point line. 

The Bearcats sit with a 12-9 record overall, and they have only gone 7-14 against the spread. The over has only hit in three of the games. The Bearcats are averaging 70 points while their defense is giving up 63 points per game. The offense is ranked 283rd in the league, while the defense is ranked 14th. In this game, it’s going to come down to if the offense can get enough going. Simas Lukosius is averaging 12 points while shooting 41.3 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from behind the three-point line. 

UCF vs Cincinnati Prediction

Trusting either of these teams feels pretty scary, but I just don’t trust this Bearcats offense, even against a bad defensive team. This UCF team has pushed the pace and run up the score against everyone. UCF is averaging 79.6 points per game and they are going to have no issue running up the score here. Utah shoots a lot of threes and does their best work at home and I just don’t feel like stepping in front of Utah at home when a lackluster Cincinnati offense is the alternative. Give me Utah here.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Preview

Outside of a middling run at the beginning of the month, the Red Raiders have been a highly consistent team so far this year. They’re yet to lose consecutive outings. Texas Tech opened on a 7-1 stretch that featured a lone loss to St. Joseph’s among wins over Bethune-Cookman, Northwestern State, Wyoming, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Syracuse, Northern Colorado, and DePaul. A 4-3 stretch ensued with losses to Texas A&M, UCF, and Iowa State alongside wins otherwise versus Oral Roberts, Lamar, Utah, and BYU. Since then it’s been a pair of consecutive wins over Kansas State and Arizona to give the Raiders a 13-4 overall record so far this year.

In the Arizona game on Saturday, the Red Raiders came out of halftime sporting a 33-26 advantage. Texas Tech kept it rolling in the second half with a 37-28 run and took the win 70-54 in the end. Leading the team in scoring with a double-double was JT Toppin with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Chance McMillian added 14 points with four rebounds, and Christian Anderson came off the bench for 10 points and three boards in 34 minutes of work.

Cincinnati Bearcats Betting Preview

Over on the Bearcats’ side, they’ve got one bad losing streak in the bag from earlier this month. Otherwise, however, Cincinnati’s record this year is remarkably clean. Over a 10-1 start this season, the Bearcats lost to only Villanova with wins otherwise versus AR-Pine Bluff, Morehead State, Nicholls, Northern Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Alabama State, Howard, Xavier, Dayton, and Grambling. A four-game losing streak ensued after that with defeats courtesy of Kansas State, Arizona, Baylor, and Kansas. Since then, however, it’s been a pair of wins over Colorado and Arizona State for a 12-5 overall record at this point in the season.

Matched up against Arizona State over the weekend, the Bearcats came into the second half with a solid 36-22 advantage. Cincinnati was outscored 38-31 the rest of the way but still held on for the victory 67-60. Leading the team in scoring was Dillon Mitchell with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Both Jizzle James (two assists) and Dan Skillings (four rebounds) each chipped in 12 points. Simas Lukosius was also in double-figures among the starters with his 10 points, four boards, and four steals in 25 minutes of action on the court.

Cincinnati vs Texas Tech Prediction

I’ll stick with Texas Tech. The Red Raiders are looking good these days, and they’re coming off another solid win over Arizona. In that one, Texas Tech ended up shooting just 36.4 percent, but they also had a 50-34 advantage on the boards and held the Wildcats to only 31 percent shooting on the other side. Texas Tech has held opponents to just 111 combined points over their last two games, and they’ve scored 70 or more in seven of the last eight games (a 6-2 run overall).

As for Cincinnati, they didn’t shoot spectacularly (41.7 percent) themselves in their latest win over Arizona State and also got outmuscled on the glass 42-33 (16-9 offensive). The Bearcats posted 17 points off 14 Sun Devils turnovers however, which proved to be the difference in the game statistically (outside of the 35.5 percent shooting allowed, that is). Cincinnati has been below 69 points in six straight games (a 2-4 stretch) so it wouldn’t be surprising to see a lower-scoring defensive battle here. In the end, I like Texas Tech to power one out, but it should be a good matchup regardless. It’ll be a fun game to watch.

The Sun Devils are still a decent team that have other scoring options, and while I think Cincinnati still wins this game, I think that Arizona State covers and keeps this within single digits. The Bearcats are allowing just 60.5 points per game this year and they just held Kansas to 54 points last time out. I do think this game is a complete toss-up, so I am going to look at the under.
