Both of these teams come into this matchup after completing a comeback in their last game and will be looking to hang a NIT Championship banner with a win here. UC Irvine is the much better defensive team in this contest, while Chattanooga is shooting over 48% from the field and is the better offensive team. We have seen the Mocs overcome slow starts against Loyola and Bradley, and I think they are the better option in this game. I know the Chattanooga defensive numbers aren’t great this season, but they have been fine during this tournament and I really like how their offense is looking. This should be a great game to watch, but I am taking the points with the Mocs.

UC Irvine Just Keeps Cruising 

UC Irvine just keeps cruising and they have won the first three games of the NIT Tournament. In two games against Jacksonville State, UC Irvine secured a 66-61 victory, and in the last game against UAB, they picked up an 81-77 win. It took overtime in the last game, but they made the plays late to pick up the win. UC Irvine shot 41.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Devin Tillis was the top player putting up 22 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. 

UC Irvine is averaging 75.9 points while their defense is giving up 66.5 points per game. This is a strong offensive team, but don’t overlook the defense. In this game, the defense is going to need to put on a show. Bent Leuchten has been the top player, averaging 15.4 points while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from behind the three-point line.

North Texas Defense Keeps Stepping Up

The North Texas defense has been strong all season, and the last couple of games it’s been the star of the show. Two games ago, North Texas picked up the 75-71 victory, and in the last game against Oklahoma State, they were able to pick up the 61-59 victory. The games have been intense, but they have been able to make the stops late to win. North Texas shot 37.7 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from behind the three-point line. Atin Wright had a strong game putting up 15 points. 

North Texas has a 27-8 overall record, and they believe they can win this entire thing. The Mean Green are averaging 68 points, while their defense is giving up 59.9 points per game. Guard Atin Wright is averaging 14.9 points while shooting 40.2 percent from the field and 40.1 percent from behind the three-point line.

This total is too high. North Texas is an elite defense giving up 59.9 points per agme and they are going  to step up in a major way here. UC Irvine is fine playing at a fast, or a slower pace, and they will be just fine making this into a defensive battle. Neither team is going to end up over the 60 point mark here. And this game will stay under. This is one of my favorite plays on the board.

UC Irvine had a fantastic regular season in the Big West conference and they only have six losses on the season, but this will be a very tough test for them. The Anteaters have won eight of their last nine games, but they did struggle to get by Jacksonville State last time out. UAB has won four of their last five games and they had a huge second half against Santa Clara in their last victory. UC Irvine has the much better defensive numbers on the season, but I think they are going to struggle to get stops here. UAB’s offense has been rolling over the last five weeks and I think that offense will keep them in this game. Take the Blazers with the points.

I’m looking at UC-Irvine in this one. I personally think the Anteaters got kind of lucky to escape Northern Colorado in the fashion that they did. But the fact of the matter here is that the Anteaters are one of the better teams overall remaining in the NIT. They are the better team by a fair margin in this matchup. I’ll give Jacksonville State some credit for making it past the first round and taking it to a power conference high-seed in Georgia Tech, but the Yellow Jackets just looked disinterested with being in the NIT. I think Jacksonville State will have a much tougher test in Sunday’s matchup. Give me UC-Irvine laying the points in this one.

Hawaii Pulled it Out Late

It was quite the battle for UC Irvine in the last game against UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. UC Irvine gave up only 60 points, and although the offense wasn’t exactly elite, they were able to win by two points. Hawaii on the season, is averaging 71.6 points while their defense is giving up 70 points per game. The offense is ranked 257th in the league while the defense is ranked 131st. Hawaii’s offense has been a bit inconsistent at times, and they are going to need to get out to a fast start in this game. I’ll stay with UC Irvine I suppose. The line’s a little on the thick side, though. The Anteaters played a sloppy game (20 turnovers) in their matchup with a middling Towson team but shot well. UC Irvine hit 52.2 percent from the field, 50 percent from the 3-point range, and 92.9 percent (13-of-14) from the line along with a 36-24 rebounding advantage. The Anteaters have a tepid 118 combined points in their last two outings, though.

As for CSUB, they were able to outmuscle Southern Utah 34-30 on the boards in their last appearance, but their 14 turnovers led to 17 Thunderbirds points. This could turn into another messy game if neither team can get their turnover troubles dialed in, but on paper, it should be UC Irvine all the way here.

In their Saturday game versus the Roadrunners, the Anteaters came out of the locker room with a 39-33 edge. UC Irvine kept the pace from there on 38 more points in a 77-71 win. Leading the charge was Bent Leuchten with 14 points, four steals and three blocks.

ANDREW’S FREE UC SANTA BARBARA VS UC IRVINE PREDICTION

I’ll stay with the Anteaters. UC Irvine is playing pretty well during this current 6-1 run and coming off a solid win over CSU Bakersfield despite shooting a tepid 42.3 percent from the field and 3-of-15 (20 percent) from outside. The Anteaters were saved by a nice 30-of-35 (85.7 percent) from the line in that one, and bagged 20 points off 15 Roadrunners turnovers.

In the last meeting between these teams back on February 8, UC Irvine secured a 76-61 road victory. The Anteaters shot a nice 53.2 percent in that one with 31 rebounds and just seven turnovers. I like another good performance in the home rematch on the way to a UC Irvine cover.

The problem is I have to call into question just how much motivation Oregon has here. I’m sure they’d like revenge after UC-Irvine beat them in this same building in November, but that also has to give Irvine some confidence that they can do it again. I’ll likely stay with UC Irvine in this one. The Anteaters are looking pretty good since early last month and they’re 6-2 in their last eight games. UC Irvine was able to power out a road victory at Icardo Center when these teams last met on New Year’s Eve. That one ended up a 79-75 finish featuring a 46-36 second-half advantage for the Anteaters. As for CSUB, they’re on a four-game losing skid right now and haven’t seen more than 68 points in any of those outings. I like a finish in the high 60s or so for the Roadrunners here but I don’t think they’ll quite make the cover.
