Johni Broome has been a mismatch all season, and he put up 23 points, seven rebounds, and one assist.

Auburn has a 28-5 overall record, and they really need to use this game as a tune-up so they aren’t knocked out against a very good team in either Louisville or Creighton. Auburn wants to get up and down, averaging 83.8 points, while their defense is giving up 69.6 points per game. In this game, they will need the offense to put on a show here to try to run away with it early. Johni Broome is averaging 18.9 points while shooting 51.3 percent from the field and 28.9 percent from deep.

What a Thriller for Alabama State

Alabama State is one of eight teams that has already played a game already this tournament, and they had the most exciting win of the four games. Alabama State faced off against St. Francis on Tuesday, and they hit a Hail Mary pass and shot to secure the two-point victory. At halftime, they were down 39-34, but in the second half, they fought back, and they ended up on top 70-68. Alabama State was outshot 50 percent to 42.9 percent from the field, but the shots late ended up being the difference. Amarr Knox had a strong game, putting up 16 points. Three different players put up at least 10 points.

Alabama State has a 16-18 overall record, and it had to go on quite the run to even make the NCAA Tournament. Ole Miss Rebels Betting Preview

The Rebels have done a pretty good job record-wise amid a tough schedule this year, but they have had a couple of shaky runs along the way. Ole Miss hit a nice 15-2 start over their first 17 games, losing to only Purdue and Memphis during that time. The Rebels went just 1-4 over the next five outings though, beating only Texas among losses to Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Missouri and Auburn. After wins over Kentucky, LSU and South Carolina in the next three, the Rebels gave it back with losses to Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Auburn. Since then it’s been a 3-1 run with a lone loss to Florida amid wins over Oklahoma, Tennessee and Arkansas. In total over 32 games so far this year that gives Ole Miss a 22-10 record in the books.

On Thursday versus Arkansas, Ole Miss was outscored 46-41 in the second half but managed to eke out the win in dramatic fashion 83-80. The Rebels’ leading scorer was Malik Dia with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

Auburn Tigers Betting Preview

Over on the Auburn side, they’ve been great all year long but they’ve also suffered consecutive losses for the first time all year in their most recent two outings. The Tigers lost to only Duke in their first eight, then beat Richmond, Ohio State, Georgia State, Purdue, Monmouth, Missouri, Texas, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss and Oklahoma before another loss to Florida. Auburn picked it up again with wins over Vanderbilt, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Ole Miss and Kentucky, then took losses in consecutive games to Texas A&M and Alabama. That gives the Tigers a 27-4 run through 31 games this year so far.

In the Alabama home rematch on Saturday, the Tigers went into the second half with a 45-42 deficit. Auburn eventually forced overtime but ended up losing 93-91 in the end. Tops in scoring was Johni Broome with 34 points, eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and five blocks. Tahaad Pettiford came off the bench for 19 points, four rebounds and six assists in 34 minutes of work, and Miles Kelly had 13 points with four rebounds and one assist in 36 minutes. Denver Jones chipped in nine points with six assists and two rebounds as well.

I’ll still lean toward Auburn. The Tigers have a lot to prove in this tournament run following consecutive losses in their last two games. In the Alabama defeat at home, the Tigers shot well (47.9 percent) and had just nine turnovers. That said, Auburn also missed six of 17 free throws (64.7 percent), got out-rebounded 41-33 and gave up 52.2 percent shooting on defense. The 20 points off 15 Alabama turnovers helped, but it wasn’t enough. Including the losses to Texas A&M and Florida, Auburn is now just 6-3 in their last nine games—which isn’t very good for them this year.

These teams have met twice before during the regular season, with Auburn taking the victory both times. The Tigers managed a 92-82 road win on February 1, then a 106-76 blowout victory at home on February 26. In that latest matchup, Auburn scored a whopping 56 points in the second half on the way to 59.6 percent shooting from the field, 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from 3-point range and 81.8 percent (27-of-33) from the line. With the 33-20 rebounding advantage and the 18 points off 10 Ole Miss turnovers, it wasn’t much of a game. This one may not be so lopsided but Auburn definitely has the edge in most facets.

Denver Jones is questionable for Auburn with an ankle injury. Alabama will be without Latrell Wrightsell Jr. and Houston Mallette, while Derrion Reid is questionable with a lower-body injury.

What a Slide for Texas A&M

Just a few weeks ago, Texas A&M looked like one of the best teams in college basketball, but that has all fallen apart, and they have lost four games in a row. In the last game against Florida, the defense couldn’t do anything all night, giving up 89 points, which led to the defeat. They gave up 45 points in the first half, and in the second half, it got even worse. They allowed Florida to shoot 42.4 percent from deep, and they need the defense to better from deep here. Zhuric Phelps was the top offensive player, putting up 16 points and five rebounds. 

Texas A&M has a 20-9 overall record and 14-13-2 against the spread. For most of the season, Texas A&M’s defense has been good, so it was a bit shocking how bad it looked against Florida. In each of the last three games, the defense has given up at least 77 points. The defense overall is still ranked 56th in the league. Wade Taylor IV is averaging 15.1 points, and he helps pace the Aggies’ offense. 

Auburn is the Real Deal

Auburn keeps getting thrown tests, and they pass with flying colors. At this point, it would be shocking if they weren’t the number one overall seed in the tournament. In the last game, they went on the road to face a very good Kentucky Wildcats team, and they put up 94 en route to the 16-point victory. The Tigers continued their hot shooting, hitting 51.8 percent of their shots and 44.4 percent from behind the three-point line. Miles Kelly was the star who stepped up, putting up 30 points, two rebounds, and one assist. 

Auburn has a 27-2 record overall and is 18-11 against the spread. Away from home straight up, they have gone 8-1. Auburn’s defense is solid, but their offense is the strength, averaging 85.4 points per game. Johni Broome is averaging 18.4 points while shooting 50.5 percent and grabbing 10.8 rebounds per game. He gets the attention, but six players average at least 10 points per game. 

Why Auburn Will Beat Texas A&M

Ole Miss Rebels Betting Preview

The Rebels have really only had one or two bad runs so far this year—and they’ve been brief. Otherwise, it’s been a pretty good run for Ole Miss. During a 15-2 opening run, the Rebels managed to dispatch Long Island University, Grambling, South Alabama, Colorado State, Oral Roberts, BYU, Louisville, Lindenwood, Southern Miss, Southern, Queens U, Georgia, Arkansas, LSU and Alabama. A 1-4 run came next with a lone win over Texas amid losses to Mississippi State, Texas A&M, Missouri, and Auburn. After wins over Kentucky, LSU, and South Carolina, Ole Miss fell versus Mississippi State and Vanderbilt on the way to a 19-8 overall run through their first 27 games of the season so far.

In the Vanderbilt matchup back on Saturday, the Rebels came out of halftime sporting a 41-33 deficit. Ole Miss got better from there on a 39-36 run but still lost 77-72 in the end. Leading the team in the defeat was Malik Dia with 22 points, seven boards, two blocks, one assist, and one steal. Sean Pedulla added 21 points with six boards and four assists with one steal, while Jaylen Murray chipped in on 10 points, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The only bench points (eight) came from Jaemyn Brakefield alongside his six rebounds in 26 minutes.

Auburn Tigers Betting Preview

Over on the Auburn side, they’ve only got two blemishes on the card so far this year. The Tigers opened on a nice 21-1 run with a lone loss to Duke. Among wins over Vermont, Houston, Kent State, North Alabama, Iowa State, North Carolina, Memphis, Richmond, Ohio State, Georgia State, Purdue, Monmouth, Missouri, Texas, South Carolina, Mississippi State, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU and Ole Miss. After another loss to Florida on February 8, the Tigers have since taken out Vanderbilt, Alabama, Arkansas, and Georgia. That gives Auburn a 25-2 overall record through 27 games so far this season.

Matched up against Georgia in their most recent outing, the Tigers held a 29-24 edge in the first half. Auburn hit a 53-46 run the rest of the way and powered out the win 82-70 in the end. Johni Broome led the team on his 31 points with 14 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks. Denver Jones added 17 points with one assist, while both Chad Baker-Mazara (four assists; three rebounds) and Miles Kelly (eight rebounds; two assists) each chipped in 11 points apiece. Chaney Johnson added four points off the bench as well.

Auburn vs Ole Miss Prediction

I may take a stab at Ole Miss here. The Rebels will certainly need to play their best in order to be competitive though, and coming off a pair of losses that’s admittedly a lot to ask. Ole Miss shot a tepid 41.7 percent from the field in their latest loss to Vanderbilt, getting out-rebounded 37-30 along the way. The good news is that the Rebels were great from the line (13-of-15 for 86.7 percent) and they scored 21 points off 13 Vanderbilt turnovers. Still, Ole Miss has given up a combined 158 points across their last two games and they’re about to face a high-scoring Tigers offense.

The last time these teams saw each other back on February 1, Auburn secured a 92-82 win on the road. Ole Miss didn’t play too badly, shooting 46.4 percent from the field. The Rebels just couldn’t keep up with the Tigers’ pace though, as Auburn shot 48.4 percent with a 41-30 rebounding edge. I like Ole Miss to get in there for a cover during the rematch if all goes well, though.

I’m on Auburn here. It’s a massive number but I really think that Auburn has earned the respect of being a sizeable favorite at home. The Tigers are the better team here by a fair margin and are one of the best teams in the country according to the selection committee who have already looked at Auburn as the #1 team in the tournament field. Arkansas on the other hand, has been a pretty big disappointment up to this point, and I think this is just a case of the haves vs. the have-nots and I think Auburn has enough to get the win and cover at home in this one. Give me Auburn in a beatdown.
