The Houston Cougars (32-4, 19-15-2 ATS) are likely the hottest team in basketball and one of the most serious contenders for the championship. The Cougars ended the regular season with ten straight victories and won the Big 12 tournament after defeating Colorado, BYU, and Arizona. Houston destroyed SIU Edwardsville in the first round of the NCAA tournament, while the Cougars had some issues against Gonzaga in the second round but prevailed 81-76.

Houston just throttled a solid Longwood team by 40 in last year’s opening round, and I just don’t think that SIUE hangs around here. Houston has done far better against far better, and I think that SIUE is overmatched in this game, plain and simple. Colorado Making A Run?

Too bad Colorado didn’t play like this all season because this has looked like a different team in the last couple of games. Two games ago against TCU, they won 69-67, and in the last game against West Virginia, they were able to pick up the 67-60 victory. In the second half, Colorado scored 44 points, and that was the difference as they picked up the win. The Buffaloes shot 44.9 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from behind the three-point line. Elijah Malone also came off the bench and paced the team putting up 11 points. 

Even though they have won the last couple of games, Colorado still sits with a 14-19 record overall, and a loss here will end. The Buffaloes are averaging 70.7 points overall, while their defense is giving up 71.7 points per game. The offense has been far too inconsistent, and against a tough defensive team, they will need the offense to really step up. Julian Hammond III has been the top player, averaging 12.7 points while shooting 42 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Houston Ready for Their Run

Houston believes they have a run in them, that they hope finishes with them winning the National Championship. Houston’s defense has been strong heading into this game, and they are going to look for another strong here. Two games ago against Kansas, Houston won 65-59 and in the last game against Baylor they won 65-61. LJ Cryer has been the top player, putting up 23 points and two rebounds. Four different players put up at least 11 points. 

Houston sits with a 27-4 record overall and although they might be doing it quietly, this is undoubtedly one of the best teams in the country. This is a team that does a good job of creating turnovers, and those turnovers are going to be a key here. LJ Cryer has been the top player, averaging 15.3 points while shooting 42.1 percent from the field and 43.1 percent from behind the three-point line.

The last two games have been fun for Colorado, but it’s all got to come to an end at some point, and for the Buffaloes, that will happen on Thursday. Houston’s defense has been elite, giving up only 58.1 points, and they will step up in a significant way again here. Colorado hasn’t been known for their offense all season, and this isn’t going to be the game in which they magically find a way to figure out the Houston defense. It’s going to be a tight one, though.
