UC Irvine just keeps cruising and they have won the first three games of the NIT Tournament. In two games against Jacksonville State, UC Irvine secured a 66-61 victory, and in the last game against UAB, they picked up an 81-77 win. It took overtime in the last game, but they made the plays late to pick up the win. UC Irvine shot 41.4 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Devin Tillis was the top player putting up 22 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists. 

UC Irvine is averaging 75.9 points while their defense is giving up 66.5 points per game. This is a strong offensive team, but don’t overlook the defense. In this game, the defense is going to need to put on a show. Bent Leuchten has been the top player, averaging 15.4 points while shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from behind the three-point line.

North Texas Defense Keeps Stepping Up

The North Texas defense has been strong all season, and the last couple of games it’s been the star of the show. Two games ago, North Texas picked up the 75-71 victory, and in the last game against Oklahoma State, they were able to pick up the 61-59 victory. The games have been intense, but they have been able to make the stops late to win. North Texas shot 37.7 percent from the field and 38.9 percent from behind the three-point line. Atin Wright had a strong game putting up 15 points. 

North Texas has a 27-8 overall record, and they believe they can win this entire thing. The Mean Green are averaging 68 points, while their defense is giving up 59.9 points per game. Guard Atin Wright is averaging 14.9 points while shooting 40.2 percent from the field and 40.1 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Why North Texas WIll Beat UC Irvine

• North Texas has won each of its last nine night games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
• UC Irvine has lost the first half in five of its last six National Invitation Tournament games.

This total is too high. North Texas is an elite defense giving up 59.9 points per agme and they are going  to step up in a major way here. UC Irvine is giving up 66.5 points per game and their defense is also going to step up in a big way also. UC Irvine is fine playing at a fast, or a slower pace, and they will be just fine making this into a defensive battle. Neither team is going to end up over the 60 point mark here. And this game will stay under. This is one of my favorite plays on the board.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Preview

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are 17-17 (7-13) this season after they defeated SMU by a score of 85-83 in their last game. Oklahoma State trailed 41-40 at halftime, but they scored 45 points in the second half for the win. The Cowboys shot 50.8% from the field, 47.6% on three pointers, and 68.2% on free throws in the game. Bryce Thompson led Oklahoma State with 24 points and three rebounds, while Abou Ousmane added 18 points and five rebounds in the game. 

Prior to that win, the Cowboys defeated Wichita State by a score of 89-79, but did lose to Cincinnati by a score of 87-68 before that. Oklahoma State has won three of their last four games and they finished tied for 12th in the Big 12 standings with a 7-13 record. Oklahoma State has scored 73.4 points per game and they have allowed 76.8 points against per game, while also averaging 35.3 rebounds and 12.8 assists per game this season. Bryce Thompson is averaging 12.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, while Abou Ousmane is averaging 12.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.0 steal per game this year. Oklahoma State is shooting 42.6% from the field, 72.3% on free throws, and 32.5% on three pointers this season. 

North Texas Mean Green Betting Preview

The North Texas Mean Green are 26-8 (14-4) this year after they defeated Arkansas State by a score of 65-63 in their last game. North Texas led 34-33 at halftime, but they needed a field goal with two seconds left in regulation to get the win. The Mean Green shot 43.9% from the field, 37.5% on three pointers, and 69.2% on free throws in the game. Jasper Floyd led North Texas with 18 points and five rebounds, while Latrell Jossell added 18 points and one rebound in the win.

Oklahoma State vs North Texas Prediction 

Oklahoma State had a very underwhelming season in the Big 12 this year, but they have played well through two games of the NIT. The Cowboys have scored at least 78 points in three of their last four games, which has covered up for some poor defense. North Texas was very successful in the AAC this year, but they had a very close call with Arkansas State in their last game. The Mean Green play strong defense, but their offense has been inconsistent throughout the season. I know Oklahoma State’s defense is a problem, but I think their offense will be too good on their home court. Take the Cowboys here.

The Red Wolves joined the tournament in the quarterfinals, beating Marshall and then edging out No. 1 South Alabama in the semis. However, Arkansas State was helpless against Troy in the finals and lost 94-81. At the NIT, Arkansas State dismantled Saint Louis 103-78 in the first round.

Arkansas State averages 79.9 PPG (43rd) and allows 70.4 PPG (132nd). The Red Wolves are 10th in rebounds (40.8) and 141st in assists (14.3). Taryn Todd leads the team with 14.8 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 3.3 APG, and 1.2 SPG. Joseph Pinion follows him with 12.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 1.2 SPG, while Kobe Julien chips in 11.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG, and a team-high 1.4 SPG.

The North Texas Mean Green (25-8, 16-13-2 ATS) were in great form with seven consecutive wins late in the regular season but couldn’t win the very last game as Temple prevented them from making it eight in a row. North Texas booked the No. 2 seed and beat Tulsa in the quarterfinals of the American tournament, but lost the semis to UAB. North Texas defeated Furman in the first round of the NIT.

North Texas is averaging 68.3 PPG (343rd) and is allowing 59.8 PPG (3rd). The Mean Green are getting 32.7 RPG (360th) and dish out 10.6 APG (424th). Atin Wright is the team’s top performer with 15.2 PPG and 2.4 RPG. The teams have traded victories in the previous ten games as each recorded five, but the last H2H duel was played back in 2013. North Texas is in better form recently and is great at home this season, having a 16-1 record, so I am leaning toward the Mean Green in this one. It’s likely going to be a low-scoring affair as North Texas has one of the strongest defenses in the country and is the second-slowest offense. I don’t know how Arkansas State will manage such a situation when the opponent doesn’t have plenty of possessions, which also means fewer possessions for them as well. I am backing the Mean Green to win and cover a modest spread.

Furman Recap

The Furman Paladins come into the NIT on behalf of the SoCon, finishing the year with an overall record of 25-9 including an 11-7 mark in SoCon play. As the 5-seed in the conference tournament, Furman knocked off Samford and top-seeded Chattanooga before falling to Wofford in the SoCon title game.

Paladins Making First NIT Appearance Since 2019

PJay Smith Jr. leads the Paladins in scoring and in assists with 18 PPG and 3.9 APG along with 4.2 RPG. Nick Anderson has 14.7 PPG with 2.4 APG to cap off the pair of double-digit scorers for Furman up to this point in the year. Garrett Hien also has 7.6 PPG with 4.6 RPG and 2.4 APG while Cooper Bowser has 8.5 PPG and 4.7 RPG as well on the year. Ben VanderWal has 5.7 PPG with a team-high 5.5 RPG to lead the Paladins on the glass this season. As a team, Furman is averaging 77.6 PPG on 45.7% shooting from the field, 36.7% from three and 68.8% from the foul line this season.

I’m on the over in this game. These two teams started to really come on strong down the stretch offensively, despite playing at two of the slower paces in the country this season. North Texas was a team I wouldn’t rely on for points, yet they’d put up 70-75 points on any given night. On the other side, Furman found themselves in some pretty high-scoring affairs in SoCon play, and I think that even a modest 72-64 kind of game gets us well over this total. Give me the over here.

The UAB Blazers are shooting 34.4 percent from beyond the arc and 75.9 percent from the free throw line. The North Texas Mean Green are allowing 30.9 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 30.4 rebounds per game.

North Texas has had the better season and should be favored, but the value is with UAB and the points. UAB is one of the best scoring teams in the country and that could be even more of a factor after both teams played yesterday. The two meetings this season also came down to the wire, as North Texas won by three points in December, while UAB won by three points in early February. Three of the last four games between UAB and North Texas have been decided by three points. Give me UAB and the bucket.

Charlotte 49ers Betting Preview

Charlotte started out on a middling run this year, but they’ve had some major difficulties since late December. The 49ers lost five of their first dozen games versus Utah State, LIU, East Tennessee State, Davidson and Hawaii, then hit a losing streak versus Charleston, Tulane, Rice, FAU, Tulsa, Wichita State and Memphis. A 3-5 run came next with wins over South Florida, Rice and Temple amid losses to Temple, UAB, Wichita State, FAU and East Carolina. Since then it’s been consecutive losses to Tulane and East Carolina, giving the 49ers a 10-19 overall record across 29 games so far this season.

In the East Carolina game on Sunday, the 49ers opened on a 27-27 run. After halftime Charlotte fell behind on a 51-49 stretch and lost the game 78-76 in the end. Tops in scoring was Nik Graves with 32 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the losing effort. Robert Braswell added 14 points with two rebounds and one assist, while Giancarlo Rosado chipped in with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes on the floor.

North Texas Mean Green Betting Preview

Over on the North Texas side, they’ve done a solid job in the record column so far this year with only a couple instances of consecutive losses. The Mean Green fell to McNeese, Utah State and High point in their first nine outings, then beat MS Valley State, App State, Houston Christian, UAB, Rice, East Carolina, UTSA, Temple, FAU and Wichita State (with a lone loss to Memphis) in the next 11 outings. After losses to UTSA and UAB, the Mean Green came back with another win streak over Tulane, Rice, Tulsa, South Florida, Florida Atlantic and Wichita State. In total over 28 games that gives the Mean Green a 22-6 record thus far.

Matched up against Wichita State in their Monday outing, the Mean Green were up by three points in the locker room. North Texas managed to fend off the Shockers on a 38-37 run the rest of the way, eking out the win 68-66 in the end. Atin Wright was the only North Texas starter to finish in double-figures with 21 points, four rebounds and one assist in 35 minutes on the court. Bremen Lorient led the bench effort with 15 points and three rebounds in 19 minutes, while Latrell Jossell had 13 bench points, one rebound, one assist, one steal and one block in 24 minutes of work out there.

Why the North Texas Mean Green will win

• North Texas has won each of its last 10 night games at The Super Pit.
• Charlotte has lost each of its last nine road games.
• North Texas has won the first half in 21 of its last 22 night games at The Super Pit.

North Texas vs Charlotte Prediction

I’m going to stay with North Texas in this one, but the line’s probably a little too thick to mess with. The Mean Green took out a pretty decent Wichita State team in their last outing, but it was close. North Texas shot a nice 51.1 percent from the field with 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from outside and 13-of-14 (92.9 percent) from the line in that one. That said, the Green did give up 46.2 percent shooting on the other side and had 14 turnovers for 16 Shockers points. Still, that extends the Mean Green’s win streak to six. They’ve been above 68 points in just two of those games, however.

As for Charlotte, they were able to hang around with East Carolina for most of the game in their last appearance but couldn’t finish it off. The 49ers shot pretty well (44.6 percent) in that one but also gave up 52.8 percent to the Pirates alongside a 37-29 rebounding deficit and 13 turnovers for 18 points on the other side. Charlotte has been giving up a lot of points lately: 72 or more in six straight. North Texas should have plenty of offensive opportunities here.

When these two teams faced off in January it was North Texas that secured the 58-54 victory. The visiting team has won the last three games played between these two. 

What a Disappointing Game for Wichita State

Wichita State was playing well at home this season, but they are coming off a loss they wish they could have back. The Shockers faced off against the UAB Blazers, scoring 72 points, but the defense gave up 80. The Shockers shot 46.6 percent from the field and only 21.1 percent from deep. They need to hit more shots from deep in this game. Corey Washington did have a considerable game trying to keep Wichita State in it, putting up 24 points and 11 rebounds. Two games ago against Tulane, they played better and picked up the 76-67 victory. 

The Shockers have a 17-11 overall record and are 11-4-2 against the spread. They have done a good job with the offense, but the defense hasn’t been great. They give up 73 points per game, which is 213th in college basketball. Xavier Bell has been the top player, averaging 15.2 points while shooting 42 percent from the field and 36,5 percent from behind the three-point line. 

North Texas Keeps Winning

North Texas keeps winning games, and they have won five games in a row. Two games ago against South Florida, North Texas picked up the 64-57 victory, and in the last game against FAU, they won 71-61. They were up by three at halftime, and the defense gave up only 27 points in the second half. North Texas shot 52.9 percent from the field, and they will need the shooting to be good again. Brenan Lorient had a strong game, putting up 16 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Three different players put up at least 10 points. Even though they won, they could get more production from some starters. The last loss came exactly a month ago against the UAB Blazers. 

The Mean Green have a 21-6 record overall, and they have gone 14-9-2 against the spread. At home, they have gone 11-1 and, as the favorite, 17-1. North Texas wants to keep the pace slower, and their defense is one of the best in the country. They are giving up only 58.9 points per game, which is 2nd in all of college basketball. In the first game against Wichita State, the defense was elite and they must be at the same level. Atin Wright has been the top player, averaging 13.6 points while shooting 38.8 percent from the field and 40 percent from deep.

This game will feature a team with an elite defense and an inconsistent offense, but we already have a good idea about what the Shockers do against North Texas.  In the first game between these two teams, there weren’t even 120 points scored, and this game will be much of the same. This North Texas defense is elite, giving up only 58.9 points per game. They haven’t cared what type of offense they have played this season; they have locked it down. Their pace has also helped keep games lower scoring. North Texas might reach 60 points here, but they aren’t going to get much higher than that, and this game will end up staying under the total. This is one of my favorite plays on the board.

The Bobcats have a fair amount of returning production for this game, at least an advantage over North Texas in terms of the amount of returning production, but the Bobcats do lose their starting RB Ismail Mahdi who had 991 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns this season. The Bobcats will also be without RT Alex Harkey as well as top CB Josh Eaton and a pair of defensive tackles in Terry Webb and Tavian Coleman who both hit the transfer portal. The big thing to watch for in this game is how much we see of Texas State QB Jordan McCloud. There’s been rumblings that he will see limited action in this game and would be replaced fairly early in this game, so if you’re planning on backing the Bobcats, just be forewarned.

Utah State Aggies Betting Preview

The Aggies have gotten through a half-dozen games so far, unscathed the whole way. Utah State has taken out Alcorn State, Charlotte, Westminster UT, Montana, Iowa, and St. Bonaventure in succession during that time.

On Thursday versus the Bonnies, Utah State was down 30-25 at halftime. The Aggies surged on a 47-37 run from there and took the comeback win 72-67. Mason Falslev doubled up on 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead the way.

Over on the North Texas side, they took out Evansville, WBU, and Minnesota in their first three outings before a loss to McNeese State. The Green recovered with wins over Texas Wesleyan, Oregon State, and Northern Iowa in the next trio.

I’ll lean toward Utah State. The Aggies started slowly against St. Bonaventure in Thursday’s matchup but played a disciplined game ball-control-wise with just eight turnovers. The 22-of-28 rate at the line proved to be the difference, as Utah State hit just 34.4 percent from the field and 6-of-28 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range. The good news is that the Aggies have scored 72 or more points in all six games this year; the bad news is that they let the Bonnies get a little too close on Thursday.

As for the Mean Green, they’ll be able to give the Aggies some trouble here if all goes well. North Texas hit 50 percent rom the field with a 33-26 rebounding advantage versus Northern Iowa in Thursday’s matchup, so the Green should be able to give Utah State a game here. In the end, I like the Aggies to stay in control, however.

I’m on Oregon State and the points here. I just think that this is going to be a game where points are at a premium and when that’s the case, if I’m catching a decent number, I want to be on the underdog. This is still a solid team under Wayne Tinkle for the Beavers and while North Texas has the marquee win over Minnesota, the Mean Green also has a pair of wins over subdivision teams as well. I’ll side with Oregon State here.
