Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

The Virginia Tech Hokies (13-17, 13-17 ATS) are playing in a hot and cold form now and haven’t connected two wins for over a month. The Hokies won five of the last ten games and spent the previous three at home, where they lost to Louisville and North Carolina, and beat Syracuse. Against the Orange, Virginia Tech scored a season-high 101 points (the first time this season they reached a 100-point mark) and allowed a season-high 95 points (the game went to overtime, though). Virginia Tech is 10th in the ACC Standings with the same record as Virginia, nine games behind Clemson, and ten behind the No. 1 seed Duke.

Virginia Tech averages 69.8 PPG (309th) and allows 73.1 PPG (214th). The Hokies are 337th in rebounds (33.2) and 258th in assists (13.0). Tobi Lawal leads the team with 12.5 PPG and a team-high 6.9 RPG. Mylyjael Poteat follows him with 9.6 PPG and 3.8 RPG, while Jaden Schutt has 8.2 PPG and 2.6 RPG.

Clemson Tigers Betting Preview

The Clemson Tigers (25-5, 19-11 ATS) are having a great season, and in 2025, they suffered just two losses along with 15 wins. Clemson was on a six-game winning streak before it snapped with a triple-overtime loss to Georgia Tech, but the Tigers are now on a new seven-game winning run. They will close the regular season at home following a pair of road wins over Virginia and Boston College. Clemson is 2nd in the ACC Standings with the same record as Louisville and one game behind the leaders Duke.

Clemson is averaging 77.5 PPG (94th) and is allowing 66.3 PPG (39th). The Tigers are getting 35.4 RPG (205th) and dish out 14.9 APG (112th). Chase Hunter is the team’s top scorer with 16.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 2.6 APG, and 1.3 SPG. Ian Schieffelin adds 13.1 PPG, a team-high 9.5 RPG, and 2.9 APG, while Viktor Lakhin contributes 11.5 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.0 SPG, and a team-high 1.6 BPG.

I was going to back Virginia Tech to cover because of a big spread, but considering the Hokies will likely be without their top scorer Lawal, I think Clemson will have no problems covering. Clemson won four of the previous six H2H duels and covered four of the last six, including the first meeting of the season when it was 72-57 for the Tigers. Clemson has covered the Spread in 22 of its last 36 games, while Virginia Tech has only covered the Spread in 14 of its previous 34 games.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this year, but in the last few years, the home team has been the team that has found success. 

North Carolina Has Confidence

North Carolina has had issues during the season, but they might just be heating up at the right time, as they have won five games in a row. Two games ago against Florida State, they won 96-85, and in the last game against Miami, they were able to secure a 92-73 victory. North Carolina shot 58.9 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from behind the three-point line. Ven-Allen Lubin put up 19 points and five rebounds. Six different players put up at least 11 points. That has been a big change as of late, there have been more players, especially off the bench that have stepped up. 

North Carolina has a 19-11 overall record, but it has gone 11-18-1 against the spread. It wants to push the pace, averaging 81.8 points per game, the 24th in the league. The defense has been a problem all year, and at this point, it seems they have resorted to hoping they have enough offense to come out ahead. RJ Davis has been the top player, averaging 17.2 points while shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from behind the three-point line. 

Why North Carolina Will Beat Virginia Tech

• North Carolina has won each of its last six games against non-AP-ranked opponents.
• Virginia Tech has lost five of its last six home games.

Can Virginia Tech Build on the Last Game?

Virginia Tech have not played well this season, but they are coming off a win in the last game. The Hokies faced off against Syracuse, and it took overtime, but they secured the 101-95 victory. Virginia Tech shot 60.7 percent from the field, which shows just how bad the defense was that the game was even close. Jaydon Young was the top player for Virginia Tech, and he scored 26 points, three assists, and zero rebounds. Five different players put up at least 10 points. Ben Hammon came off the bench and put up 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. 

VT has a 13-16 overall record and 13-16 against the spread. At home, they have gone only 8-8. The biggest issue for this team has been the defense; they are giving up 72.5 points per game. If they want any chance in this game, the defense will need to be a lot better. Tobi Lawal has been the top player, averaging 12.9 points and grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game.

I am not all that concerned that Virginia Tech won the last game; they just aren’t all that talented overall, and they don’t have the offensive playmakers that North Carolina has. Especially as of late, North Carolina has leaned on scorers all over the court, and there will be no shortage of scoring in this game. North Carolina is averaging 81.8 points per game, and they can get over their season average again here. The home-court advantage hasn’t been there this season for Virginia Tech, and they won’t magically break out here. The Tar Heels are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games. Back North Carolina against the spread.

Syracuse Orange Betting Preview

The Syracuse Orange lost to Pitt, beat NC State, and they play SMU and Virginia next. The Syracuse Orange are averaging 74.7 points on 45.3 percent shooting and allowing 78 points on 45.4 percent shooting. JJ Starling is averaging 18.4 points and 3.9 rebounds, while Donnie Freeman is averaging 13.4 points and 1.4 assists. Eddie Lampkin Jr. is the third double-digit scorer and Chris Bell is dishing 0.5 assists. The Syracuse Orange are shooting 32.7 percent from beyond the arc and 70.1 percent from the free throw line. The Syracuse Orange are allowing 34.5 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 34.3 rebounds per game.

Tobi Lawal is averaging 12.5 points and 6.9 rebounds, while Mylyjael Poteat is averaging 9.6 points and 1.1 assists. Jaden Schutt is dishing 1.5 assists, and Ben Burnham is grabbing 3.5 rebounds. The Virginia Tech Hokies are shooting 35.9 percent from beyond the arc and 71.8 percent from the free throw line. I’m not running to the window to back Virginia Tech or Syracuse, but somebody has to win. Virginia Tech is at home, where seven of its 12 wins have come this season. Syracuse hasn’t been able to win on the road and hasn’t been able to string together success, as the Orange haven’t won back-to-back games since early January. The Hokies have gone cold offensively over the last month, but at home, this is a game they should win. The chalk is reasonable. Give me Virginia Tech at home on early Saturday.

Louisville Cardinals Betting Preview

Louisville really only has one bad stretch of games this year; otherwise, it’s been a very nice run in the record column. The Cardinals only lost one of their first six games (versus Tennessee on November 9), then hit a 1-4 run with a lone win over UTEP amid losses to Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Duke, and Kentucky. After a winning streak over Florida State, Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, SMU, and Wake Forest, the Cardinals took another loss to Georgia Tech. The next four games were all wins over Boston College, Miami, NC State, and Notre Dame, giving the Cardinals a 20-6 overall run through 26 games.

In their Saturday matchup with Florida State, the Cardinals jumped out to a 45-31 halftime lead. Louisville posted a 50-44 deficit the rest of the way but still powered out the win 89-81 in the end. Chucky Hepburn led the team with 29 points, five steals, three rebounds, and two assists. J’Vonne Hadley doubled up on 18 points with 11 rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block in 38 minutes of work. Terrence Edwards had 16 points with two assists, and Reyne Smith added 11 points with three rebounds and one assist. Tops off the bench was Khani Rooths with six points and four boards in 15 minutes on the floor.

Virginia Tech Hokies Betting Preview

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve had a few brief runs of solid play this year but otherwise, it’s been a struggle. The Hokies went 5-8 in their first 13 games, taking losses to Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Pitt, Saint Joseph’s, and Duke in that time. A 3-1 run came next with a loss to Stanford amid wins over Miami, Cal, and NC State. Virginia Tech would go just 3-6 over the next nine games with wins over Florida State, Virginia, and Notre Dame among losses to Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Clemson, SMU, Virginia, and Boston College. That would give the Hokies an 11-15 record through their first 26 outings of the year.

Matched up against Miami over the weekend, Virginia Tech went into the break with a 38-38 tie. The Hokies came back with a 43-30 run the rest of the way and powered out the win at the end 81-68, though. Virginia Tech’s Jaydon Young was the leading team scorer with 27 points, three assists, two steals, and two rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.

Virginia Tech vs Louisville Prediction

I’ll lean toward Louisville. The Cardinals are coming off a fairly even game versus Florida State. Both teams shot upwards of 50 percent, and Louisville had a modest 31-27 rebounding edge. Even the turnovers were comparable, but Louisville scored 17 points off 14 Seminoles turnovers and Florida State had just seven points off 13 Cardinals miscues. In any case, it was another solid home win that extends Louisville’s streak to five—and they’ve lost just one game since December 14 (Kentucky) in total. Louisville is scoring well also, with 75 or more points in all five of their current victories.

As for Virginia Tech, they didn’t have too many issues with a struggling Miami team over the weekend—even on the road. The Hokies shot a nice 52.5 percent from the field in that one and had just five turnovers, though they did get outfoxed mildly on the boards 31-29. Still, it was a nice total (81) following a miserable 36 points in the road loss to Boston College. That said, Virginia Tech will be in for another tough matchup here, and I don’t quite think they’ll keep pace with Louisville.

Virginia is averaging 68.7 PPG (333rd) and is allowing 71.9 PPG (184th). The Hokies are getting 33.8 RPG (309th) and are having 13.0 APG (278th). Tobi Lawal is the team’s top scorer with 13.0 PPG, along with a team-high 7.0 RPG. Mylyjael Poteat adds 9.7 PPG, and 4.1 RPG, while Jaden Schutt has 8.5 PPG and 2.9 RPG.

Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

The Miami Hurricanes (6-20, 9-17 ATS) somehow managed to end a 10-game losing skid with a home win over Syracuse, but quickly returned to losing ways with road defeats to Pittsburgh and Florida State. It’s needless to say Miami is experiencing a disappointing season; the Canes haven’t finished with a winning percentage under .260 since the 1993-94 season (.259).

Miami averages 74.9 PPG (167th) and allows 79.7 PPG (346th). The Hurricanes are 391st in rebounds (31.9) and 286th in assists (12.9). Matthew Cleveland leads the team with 16.3 PPG, while he adds 4.3 RPG. Nijel Pack follows him with 13.9 PPG, 3.0 RPG, and a team-high 4.3 APG, while Lynn Kidd chips in with 11.1 PPG and a team-high 7.2 RPG.

Miami won four of the last five H2H duels, but Virginia Tech was victorious in the first meeting of the season, 86-85 winning at home. Each of the past H2H encounters produced 146+ points, and given the current total, I am leaning toward Over in this one.

I am aware the Canes are missing their second-best scorer, but Miami hit Over in 10 of the last 17 games at home. Also, Miami’s defense is allowing nearly 80 points per contest, which is one of the strongest arguments to go with Over.

It’s been a choppy run overall in the record books for the Hokies so far, and they’re currently sitting below the .500 mark overall. Virginia Tech opened on a 5-8 run through their first 13 outings, beating only Delaware State, USC Upstate, Winthrop, North Carolina A&T, and Navy among losses to Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Pitt, Saint Joseph’s and Duke. A 3-4 run came next with wins over Miami, Cal, and NC State among losses to Stanford, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, and Clemson. Since then it’s been a 3-2 run over the last five outings with wins over Florida State, Virginia, and Notre Dame. The losses otherwise have come versus SMU and Virginia. That gives Virginia Tech an 11-14 overall run through their first 25 games of the 2024-25 campaign.

In their Saturday matchup with Virginia, the Hokies were down by seven points heading into the second half. Virginia Tech got better from there on a 37-33 run but ended up taking the loss at the end 73-70. Leading the team in the defeat was Tobi Lawal with his 23 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Ben Hammond added 11 points with three assists in 26 minutes as the only other player on the team to finish in double-figures. Tyler Johnson got close though, putting up nine points with four boards and a pair of steals in the loss.

Boston College Eagles Betting Preview

Over on the Boston College side, they weren’t looking too bad heading into the 2025 calendar year, but since then it’s been a pretty ugly run. The Eagles went 9-5 over their first 14 games, losing to VCU, Dartmouth, South Carolina, Wake Forest and SMU. The wins otherwise were over the Citadel, Temple, Loyola MD, Old Dominion, Missouri State, Boise State, Stonehill, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Miami during that time. Since then Boston College has just one win versus Florida State on February 1. Otherwise, it’s been losses to Georgia Tech, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Louisville, Syracuse, Notre Dame, and NC State. That gives the Eagles a 10-15 overall run through their first 25 outings of the season.

Matched up against NC State on Saturday, the Eagles came out of the locker room facing a 44-29 deficit. Boston College got better from there on a 33-26 run but ended up losing in the end 70-62. Tops in scoring was Donald Hand with 22 points, six rebounds, and three turnovers in 35 minutes of work. Chad Venning added 14 points with eight rebounds and one steal with one block. Chas Kelley put up 10 points, four assists, and two rebounds off the bench as well.

Boston College vs Virginia Tech Prediction

I’ll lean toward Virginia Tech I suppose. The Hokies are coming off a home loss to a middling Virginia team though, despite hitting 46 percent from the field and staying pretty competitive on the boards. Virginia Tech coughed up 10 turnovers for 17 Cavaliers points though, which is what really buried them in the defeat. The good news is that Virginia Tech is still scoring pretty well these days; they’ve got 70 or more points in four of the last five outings—a 3-2 run.

As for Boston College, they never really got going in their latest loss to NC State, notching a rough 35.4 percent shooting and 16 turnovers for 15 Wolfpack points. That makes four straight losses for the Eagles, but they’ve been competitive in a couple of those. Still, I don’t think they’ll power past Virginia Tech.

Virginia Cavaliers Betting Preview

Virginia posted a fairly decent record through the end of the calendar year. That said, the Cavs haven’t done so well in 2025 just yet. In their first 13 outings of the season Virginia went 8-5 overall. The losses were versus Tennessee, St. John’s, Florida, SMU and Memphis. Otherwise it was wins over Campbell, Coppin State, Villanova, Manhattan, Holy Cross, Bethune-Cookman, American U and NC State in that time. Following losses to Louisville, California, Stanford, SMU and Louisville, the Cavaliers hit a much better 4-2 run. Those losses came versus Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. The victories were over Boston College, Miami, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech. The result so far has been an even .500 run at 12-12 through the Cavs’ first 24 outings.

In the Georgia Tech game over the weekend, the Cavaliers went into the locker room with a 41-36 edge. Following a 34-25 second half Virginia came away with a 75-61 win in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Isaac McKneely with 20 points and two assists in 32 minutes of action. Dai Dai Ames added 18 points with four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 30 minutes. Blake Buchanan hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds with four assists, one steal, one block and seven points as well. Anthony Robinson added six points off the bench.

I’ll stick with Virginia. The Cavaliers have been playing better lately, and they’re coming off a pretty solid home win over Georgia Tech. In that one Virginia shot 49.2 percent from the field and 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from 3-point range while collecting a 38-24 rebounding advantage. The eight turnovers were a nice touch as well. That gives the Cavaliers consecutive wins for the first time since late December, and they’ve scored 73 or more points in four straight games now (a 3-1 run).

The lone loss in that stretch came to the Hokies in a 75-74 home defeat on February 1. Virginia didn’t play badly in that one, but did give up 52.1 percent shooting from the field. The Cavs need to clamp down on defense in the road rematch, but I think they can power one out.

Clemson Tigers Betting Preview

The Tigers have been a model of consistent play so far this year. Clemson has rattled off an impressive record through their first 20 outings, with only one instance of consecutive losses in the books. The Tigers opened up with a 9-1 stretch featuring only a loss to Boise State on November 17. Otherwise it was wins over Charleston Southern, St. Francis PA, Eastern Kentucky, Radford, San Francisco, Penn State, Florida A&M, Kentucky and Miami in that time. Clemson would then lose to Memphis and South Carolina in the next two games, but got back to their winning ways quickly with victories over Wake Forest, Stanford and California in the next trio of outings. Clemson then fell to Louisville ahead of four more wins. That quartet of victories came versus Florida State, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, giving Clemson an overall record of 16-4 through the first 10 games of the 2024-25 season so far.

In their Wednesday matchup with Syracuse, the Tigers came out of the break looking up at a 48-29 advantage on the scoreboard. Clemson got outscored 43-38 the rest of the way but held on for the double-digit win 86-72 in the end. Leading the team in scoring was Chase Hunter with 23 points, one rebound, one assist and three steals. Viktor Lakhin doubled up on 16 points with 10 rebounds and two assists, while Jaeden Zackery added 14 points with five assists and two steals. Del Jones was tops off the bench with his nine points and four boards.

Over on the Hokies’ side, their year kicked off with a few wins, then came a rough losing stretch. Virginia Tech was able to right the ship somewhat in December, but it’s been a choppy run since then. The Hokies beat Delaware State, USC Upstate and Winthrop in their first three, then fell to Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Pittsburgh in the next six outings. A 5-3 stretch came next with losses to Saint Joseph’s, Duke and Stanford alongside wins over North Carolina A&T, Navy, Miami, California and NC State otherwise. Since then it’s been a pair of consecutive losses for the Hokies. Those two have come courtesy of Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, giving Virginia Tech an 8-11 overall record this year so far.

In the Georgia Tech matchup back on Wednesday, the Hokies were down 39-35 going into the second half. Virginia Tech didn’t end up getting any closer than that on a 32-29 second half deficit and fell 71-64 in the end. Leading the team in the losing effort was Tyler Johnson with 14 points, five rebounds and one steal. Tobi Lawal added 13 points with six boards and one assist, while Rodney Brown came off the bench for 10 points and five rebounds.

I’ll lean toward Clemson. The Tigers didn’t have a ton of issues versus Syracuse in their last outing—despite giving up 53.8 percent shooting from the field. Clemson shot a nice 56.4 percent themselves, along with a 28-24 rebounding edge and 19 points off 14 Orange turnovers. Clemson has scored 70 or more points in four straight games now (all wins) and 70 or more points in each of their last seven wins during this 7-1 stretch.

As for Virginia Tech, they shot a meager 37.3 percent from the field in their loss to Georgia Tech while coughing up 17 turnovers for 20 Yellow Jackets points. The Hokies did have a good night on the boards though, posting a 39-29 advantage in that department. Virginia Tech has just 127 combined points over their last two games, and fewer than 66 in every loss so far this year. If Clemson can put the clamps down on defense, the Tigers should have a clear road to a dominant performance here.

NC State has continued to play in close games and it has been mixed results. Miami Hurricanes Betting Preview

The Hurricanes opened the season on a nice run and everything was looking pretty good after three games. Miami took out Fairleigh Dickinson, Binghamton, and Coppin State in that trio. The wheels fell off after that, however, and the Hurricanes would hit a losing streak in the next seven outings versus Drake, Oklahoma State, VCU, Charleston Southern, Arkansas, Clemson, and Tennessee. Miami recovered—finally—with a win over Presbyterian on December 15, but then promptly lost their next two games versus Mount St. Mary’s and Boston College.

In the Boston College game on New Year’s Day, the Hurricanes came out of halftime holding a promising 41-29 edge. Miami didn’t stay on top much longer though: the second half was a 49-27 deficit and the Hurricanes ended up losing 78-68 in the end. Leading the team in scoring during the futile effort was Matthew Cleveland with 21 points, six rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Lynn Kidd added 14 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Topping the bench players was Paul Djobet with his 10 points, one rebound, and two steals in 20 minutes.

Over on the Virginia Tech side, they’ve followed a similar trajectory so far this year in a 5-8 start. The first three games were all victories, as the Hokies dispatched Delaware State, South Carolina Upstate, and Winthrop. A string of six straight losses followed, however. Those defeats came courtesy of Penn State, Jacksonville, Michigan, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, and Pittsburgh in succession. The Hokies would recover on a couple of victories over North Carolina A&T and Navy, but they’ve since fallen to Saint Joseph’s and Duke in their last pair.

Matched up against Duke on New Year’s Eve, the Hokies came out of the locker room looking at a 37-27 deficit on the scoreboard. Virginia Tech limped through the second half on a 51-38 run and lost 88-65 in the end. Tops in scoring was Tobi Lawal with 19 points and five rebounds with four turnovers in 22 minutes. The only other Virginia Tech player in double-figures was Patrick Wessler, who came off the bench to provide 10 points and two rebounds with one steal. Ben Burnham added nine points and one assist off the bench, while Mylyjael Poteat put up six points with two rebounds and one assist in 17 minutes of work as the next-highest starter.

Virginia Tech vs Miami Prediction

I’ll stick with Virginia Tech I suppose. Frankly, there’s not a lot to get excited about in this game considering both teams are struggling and fans are already looking forward to next season. In any case, Virginia Tech will need a much better statistical effort than they got against a good Duke team in their last game. The Hokies shot well in that one (46 percent) but also got out-rebounded 35-22 and coughed up 12 turnovers for 18 Blue Devils points. Allowing 53.4 percent shooting on the other side didn’t help matters, either.

Virginia Tech has had some major issues putting up points this year. They’ve been below 66 points in nine of their 13 games so far. That said, the Hokies have also scored well in their wins; they’ve got 80 or more in four of those five games.

As for Miami, they shot just 39.7 percent from the field in their last game versus a decent Boston College team. The Hurricanes were outmuscled on the boards 40-33 and had 11 turnovers for 11 Eagles points. On defense, Miami gave up 46.4 percent shooting in the 10-point defeat. Miami has been below 69 points in three of their last five games, so I don’t see them posting a huge total here either. I’ll stay with the Hokies, but in reality, I’m probably not touching it.

Duke Blue Devils Betting Preview

Cooper Flagg is averaging 16.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, while Kon Knueppel is averaging 12.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game this year. Duke is shooting 46.4% from the field, 73.4% on free throws, and 35.4% on three-pointers this year.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are 5-7 (0-1) this season after they lost to St. Joe’s by a score of 82-62 in their last game. Virginia Tech only trailed 32-30 at halftime, but they were outscored 50-32 in the second half in the loss. The Hokies shot 40.7% from the field, 31.8% on three-pointers, and 84.6% on free throws in the game. Ben Burhham led Virginia Tech with 11 points and two rebounds, while Ben Hammond added 11 points and two assists in the game. 

Prior to that loss, the Hokies defeated Navy by a score of 80-72 and NC A&T by a score of 95-67. Virginia Tech has lost seven of their last nine games, including a 64-59 loss to Pittsburgh in their first conference game, and they are tied for 11th in the ACC standings. Virginia Tech has scored 70.4 points per game and they have allowed 71.3 points per game, while also averaging 35.2 rebounds and 13.6 assists per game this season. Duke comes into this matchup with a 10-2 record to start the season and they are ranked #4 in the nation. The Blue Devils only have losses against Kentucky and Kansas, while picking up wins against Arizona and Auburn. Virginia Tech is just 5-7 on the year and they were just blown out by St. Joe’s at home. The Hokies have lost seven of their last nine games, with six of those losses coming by double digits. 

Duke’s offense has been pretty average to start the season, but their defense has been very good, as they are allowing 58.5 points per game. The Blue Devils have allowed 56 points or fewer in three straight games and will face a VT team that is shooting just 42.9% from the field. Virginia Tech has struggled at both ends of the court and I can’t trust them after losing by 20 at home to St. Joe’s. Take Duke here.
